Solved McAfee Security Center "Home" screen blank

Slammer

Ok I opened McAfee Security Center, and the "Home" tab is totally blank. (first screenshot). [See the attached file for what it should look like.] I have no idea why, or even when this started because I rarely open the Security Center, I just let it protect me in the background. Every other screen shows up fine (second screenshot). The weird thing is, it's not just that there's nothing there, but once I navigate away from it, I can't get back to it. Hitting the "Home" at the top right does nothing, and whatever other tab I'm on stays up and working.

Does anyone have any ideas? I've already tried updating it and restarting my computer. My updates for Vista are up to date as well. My only guess is that I had to hard reset my computer a couple days ago when it froze during updates (installing from Windows Update, not when shutting down). I know that's not a good thing to do, but I had no choice. I have a restore point I can use, and see if that helps, but I've installed several programs since then and would rather not use it if I can avoid it. However, I'd rather use a restore than have to reinstall McAfee.

Thanks for any ideas.

This is a forum where we share ideas. You will probably not like this one, but its the advice that I take myself
Why play around with those AV, that may on occassion even caused BSODs?
Use the one that is made specifically for Windows. Yes, I mean Microsoft Security Essentials. If you thing\k Mcaffe is better stick with it. But cost should not be the reason. The Mcafee money is gone. MSE is free. MSE with Malwarebytes has kept me free of Virus and malware for years. Mcafee is easy to uninstall with the Mcafee unistall tool, too.
Just my thought.

Thanks for idea Rich, I'm definitely going to look into other AV programs, but not until my current subscription runs out :) might as well get my money's worth. It still functions, I'll just have to use the Navigation tab until then if I can't get it fixed.

I am the same with rich however Microsoft Security Essentials is Basic protection only and suits a lot of Home users

If you do Banking online or Download a lot of files etc then I would stay with Mcafee - This is my opinion

Also Install the Free version of Malwarebytes as a On demand Scan not Real Time protection

Hmm I do download a lot... And I got Malwarebytes set up a a couple weeks ago. I also got online chat w/ McAfee support, they just told me to reinstall it, since nothing they did helped. But I'm still gonna go with system restore as soon as I finish converting some files, since I've gotten a few other random errors while installing products, and I think they're related to that interrupted installing of updates I did a couple days ago, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Its story time.
I have ATT dsl,. with free Mcafee that I had for years. Once MSE became well known I switched. I have faster speeds when MSE is in Scan mode and MSE found two trojans that Norton had missed. Everyone has to do what they feel is correct, but for me I want MSE and malwarebytes.

All right. I'll definitely do some research sometime in the next 327 days (haha) for when McAfee expires. Unless of course even reinstalling it doesn't fix the problem, in which case I will begin my research much sooner... I'll keep MSE in mind, but I'll probably end up going with whatever cnet says is best ^_^

I'll let you know if a restore point or reinstallation fixes it tomorrow.

The blank interface issue cropped up with McAfee (& a few other applications) when beta versions of Internet Explorer were installed or had been installed and were never uninstalled prior to updating to the final version.

I assume you are using IE9 final? (I.E. Not an RC version). I also assume you are running Vista SP2 and fully updated?

The problem should be easy enough to cure. Uninstall via Control Panel in the normal way, run the MCPR cleanup tool, reboot and run the McAfee PreInstall Tool, then reinstall from your online account.

That should sort it out.

By the way, their support forums are HERE and Technical Support is HERE.

No I'm still with IE 8. Never upgraded, don't know if I want to. But I went ahead and uninstalled and reinstalled it and it's fixed now, so all is well. It was much smoother than I expected it to be, which is good since all the restore points from before the problem were gone. Thanks for all your ideas!

For security reasons if nothing else you should install IE9 but I think it's an improvement on IE8 anyway.

Maybe I'll look into it, but I actually switched to Firefox because of the freezing problem I've been having, which was sometimes triggered by a hang during webpage loading, and IE did that a lot. But once I get that problem all figured out I may switch back and I'll compare the benefits of each online and decide what I want. Thanks for the info!
