Not being an expert on computers I thought they were both the same thing.
As I understand it, creating a system restore point takes you back to a point before changes had occurred. Ipso facto no problem therefore exists. Or is that too simplistic an interpretation?

With system restore you can make a point, now. You can go back to it later if you have problems
or
You can just go back now to a point that was made earlier
Is clearer now.

I think so. Any idea why Windows would not, on two seperate occassions, allow me to create a restore point. One was the day before the problem occurred, the other four days before.

That sounds like it may be malware, but you were already directed to use Malwarebytes and and anti virus, above, by Yard dog.
Check the space on your hard drive, do all drives have plenty of space available?
Just a guess, but it may be conflict with other software. If that is the case it is usually your anti virus. Uninstall and use Microsoft Security Essentials.

Have you tried to use a restore point? Creating a restore point just copies some files to be used if you wish to recover from a problem but you actually have to use it before it will make any changes. Please try to do that. Actually I wouldn't create a restore point because if you do the new restore point might very well get infected.
