Cannot Decrpyt Files

Hi all,

I have a question about decrypting files. A while ago, I encrypted some files (Right Click --> Properties --> General --> Advanced --> Encrypt Contents). Recently my computer started crashing frequently and wouldn't work right, so I did a complete system restore. Before that, I moved all my files onto a external HD. Now I'm trying to move them off the HD back to my laptop, but it won't let me. It says I need administrator permission, which I allow. After a second, it says "You need permission to perform this action." I hit try again repeatedly, nothing worked.

To add to that, I can't even open the file right off the HD. These are important files and I really need access to them, help!!

If it helps: Vista x64 Business
External HD is: 500GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex

Hi Richard,

I tried the steps outlined, but it didn't work. Is there some way to undo the encryption? I had other unencrypted files that easily transferred back...

This sounds like it would work, but I have no idea where the certificates are, they weren't transferred with the files, and the system restore eliminated them from my computer :(

Hi,

Look here for some advice on these files: -

Hello Steven, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Could you post back the link for that article? That does not sound like it was the EFS feature in Vista.

In the mean time, you might be able to use the 30-day trial of the program Advanced EFS Data Recovery to decrypt the files.
