Infection while external hard drive is attached

I had an infection found only by SUPERAntiSpyware called PUP.bProtect. I finally got rid of it with SAS, however, I think I might have had my Iomega external hard driver hooked to my PC when this all came about.

How do I scan that external?

Most antivirus programs have a Full System scan. If you use that, your external hard drive should be scanned as well. Seeing as how it was a "PUP" it is just a Potentially Unwanted Program and not a full blown infection.

Thank you. When I Googled this, it stated it was a serious threat, and almost impossible to get rid of. I read post after post of people who just had not been able to clear it up -- that it would come right back.

Anyway, I am now working with the Avast virus forum on this and they have always been so good, so hopefully they will be able to help me get rid of this thing.

If you are truly concerned, use system restore from a date that you are certain that you did not have the problem.
After you resolve this problem, download the free Macrium Reflect. Make an image with Macrium once a month and keep it on your external hard drive. If you ever have a problem again, you can use the image to restore to where you were before the problem.

Thank you. In fact, I already have Macrium. I can't use System Restore. I had to turn it off yesterday and dump all the points due to the problem I'm working on right now.

Nikilet,

How do I scan that external?

If you need an AntiVirus program, or want to change the one you have, you could download Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE):
Download Microsoft Security Essentials from Official Microsoft Download Center

Go to the Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) console, and, click the Settings tab.
On the left side, go to: Advanced
Select: Scan removable drives

Next, go to the Home tab
Select: Custom
Press: Scan now

A prompt appears with the drives on the machine.

Select the drives you want MSE to scan, and do a Full scan.

My Computer

Thank you. For right now I'll stick with the one I have -- Avast. I scanned the external and there were no problems.

Avast has a removable media scan, and it even scans for PUPs.

Good choice! I have it on a netbook, but, didn't think about it.

It even has a boot scan.
