Re: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

The user profile logon failure instructions are very good especially for an inexperienced user like me, however, when I get to Step 6 (two S-1-5 files) and I'm asked to rename the first file, I get an error message. I cannot rename. I'd rather not delete the user account and start over because I have some documents that I cannot replace. Any help is very much appreciated. Rosetta

Hello Rosetta, and welcome to Vista Forums.

What is the exact error message that you are getting?

Could you post a screenshot with the SID key highlighted that you are trying to rename?

Hi Shawn, thanks for getting back so fast. The exact error message is: User profile service, service failed the logon. I'm such a beginner I'm not even sure how to post a screenshot. But the SID key I'm trying to rename is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-63386024-1011406979-3447237981-1000
without the bak. The bak file is immediately below that with the exact same numbers. Does this help you?

Re: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

You would want to rename it to S-1-5-21-63386024-1011406979-3447237981-1000.bk (step 6B - OPTION ONE) first.

If it will not let you rename it, then what does it do when you try to?

Shawn,
Duh, I just realized what you were asking. Can you tell I'm frustrated? The error message I'm getting is "The registry editor cannot rename (said file) the specified key name already exists. Type another name and try again." So I tried to rename it something completely different and got the error message "Cannot rename. Error while renaming key."

It gives me the same error message "Cannot rename. Error while renaming key."

In that case, you might see if doing a System Restore at boot using a restore point dated before you got the User Profile error may be able to fix this for you.

Shawn you're a genius! The restore worked. You not only helped me restore my computer, but you restored my sanity. I can't thank you enough.
