| Vista Home Premium 32 bit | Re: Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista Once I paste the new version of "autochk.exe" in System32, and click continue at the UAC box, I get a "destination folder access denied" box. It reads: "You need permission to perform this action" and "System 32; Date created 11/2/06". Any help? |

| Vista x64 Ultimate SP2, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 | Re: Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista Wholmes, Double check using Method Two in the Take Ownership tutorial to make sure that you are the owner and have full control. The error message you got usually means that you do not have full control. If all else fails, you can temporarily enable the built-in Administrator account to replace the autochk.exe file, then disable it afterwards. This tutorial will show you how if needed. | Vista Home Premium 32 bit | Re: Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista Shawn, Thank you, thank you, thank you! This tutorial helped me tremendously. When I first had the problem of corrupted files (chkdisk being one of them) and called Dell, the only solution they gave was to "reformat to original factory installation" - my computer is only 6 months old! After only a couple of weeks of resetting everything, the corrupted files showed up again. That's when I started looking online for another solution before calling Dell again. Dell needs to have their tech people read thru this forum to learn how to help it's customers. I expect more from customer service than just a quick fix. Your solution seems to have fixed my problem. I can't say Thanks enough. Next time, I'll be sure to check this forum FIRST! Again, Thanks! Rox |

| Vista Ultimate 32 | Re: Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista Greetings, I appreciate the fact you have a copy of autochk.exe available for download. I'd been following previous suggestions for installing Windows AIK so that I could (hypothetically) use Imagex to re-install the program from the source disk. With that attempt, first of all I could not find where on the install disk to find the source for autochk.exe, and second, when I tried xcopy a file that I could find (just to demonstrate that it works), despite being logged in as the administrator, access to the file was denied. I mention this because after downloading autochk.exe, when I attempt to copy it into the windows\system32 directory to replace the corrupted version, I consistently get "access denied". When I try to change the file permissions for the corrupted version or simply erase it, I get "access denied". Given that I am the only adminstrator on the machine, this leaves me at something of a loss. Any suggestions people have would be gratefully accepted. Thanks! JD |

| Vista Ultimate 32 | Re: Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista Follow-up note - just found your thread about enabling the adminstrator account. Leave it to Microsoft to have the default user adminstrator account to be list as having administrative privileges WITHOUT ACTUALLY HAVING THEM! Wow. I'm afraid if I actually understood the logic behind that arrangement (and the total omission of this information for the user when the computer is first being set up) I would need to be on medication. Kudos to you for posting the thread. I'll give it a shot tonight after work. Many thanks. JD |
