How to Use Open Command Prompt Window Here in Vista
INFO: This will show you how to have a command prompt window open at any folder location of your choice in Vista.
WHY: This will make it easier to open a command prompt at a current folder location to perform a command task there instead of having to open a command prompt normally and manually type the folder location in using the
CD\ command.
NOTE:
A) This is not a elevated (Run as administrator) command prompt. To see how to open a elevated command prompt, see:

B) This option is not available for the folder tree in the left Navigation Pane Folders section.

OPTION ONE:
Using Shift + Right Click:
NOTE: This is the default method.
1. Navigate to a folder of your choice in a Windows Explorer window.
2. Hold down the
Shift key and
right click on the folder.
3. Click on
Open Command Window Here. (See screenshot below)

OPTION TWO:
Using Right Click Only:
NOTE: This will show you how to have Open Command Window Here as soon as you right click on a folder without having to press the Shift key first. You will need to enable this option below first though.
METHOD ONE:
Through a Download:
1. To Remove Having to Press Shift -
A)
Remove_Shift_Command_Window_Here.reg < Click To Download
2. To Restore Having to Press Shift -
A)
Restore_Shift_Command_Window_Here.reg < Click To Download
3. Click on
Save, and save the
.reg file to the
Desktop.
4. Right click the
.reg (On Desktop) file and click
Merge.
5. Click on the
Run button for Security Warning pop-up.
6. Click on
Continue (UAC),
Yes, and then
OK when prompted.
7. When done, you can delete the
.reg file (On Desktop).
METHOD TWO:
The Manual Way:
1. Open the Start Menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type
regedit and press
Enter.
3. Click the
Continue button for the UAC prompt.
4. In regedit, go to: (See screenshot below)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd

5. To Remove Having to Press Shift -
A) In the right pane right click on
Extended and click
Delete. (See screenshot above)
B) Click
Yes to confirm deletion.
6. The registry will now look like this. (See screenshot below)
A) Go to step 8.

7. To Restore Having to Press Shift -
A) In the right pane, right click on a empty area and click
New ->
String Value. (See screenshot above)
B) Type
Extended and press
Enter. (See screenshot below step 4)
8. Close regedit.
