How to Restore the Recycle Bin back to the Desktop in Vista
Information
This will show you how to restore the Recycle Bin back to the desktop if it was deleted by mistake or is missing.
NOTE
The Recycle Bin usually gets deleted by mistake when you right click on the Recycle Bin and click on Delete instead of Empty Recycle Bin.
Tip

  • First, check to make sure that the Recycle Bin was not just moved off-screen by accident.
    • Right click on a empty space on the desktop and click on View and click on Auto Arrange to check it.
  • Second, check to make sure that the desktop icons are not set to hide.
    • Right click on a empty space on the desktop and click on View and click on Show Desktop Icons to check it.
  • If you have more than one monitor, check to make sure that it did not get moved to the other monitor screen by mistake.

Re: Recycle Bin - Restore

still get a message "Recycle Bin on C:\ is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" Dialogue box appears saying Deleting 4 items (91.3MB) When actually there are no files appearing in the Recycle Bin. Under the Heading it says "$Recycle.Bin (C:\$Recycle.Bin) Discovered 0 items (0 bytes).... and the bar showing per cent of completion begins and 1/3 of the way to finiishing another Dialogue box appears that says "the action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program" which there are no other programs running and the next line says "Close the file and try again". There are no files in use to close but the file that is shown in the dailogue box is a Quickbooks file which is a file that resembles no Quickbooks file I have ever seen.

Re: Recycle Bin - Restore

Hello Jim, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might try this tutorial instead. It should work better for this problem. If the "the action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program" error will not let you do the tutorial, then try doing it in Safe Mode instead.

Re: Recycle Bin - Restore

Hello Dinesh,

See if toggling it on and off may help. Also check the TIP box at the top of this tutorial to see if any of it may apply to you. If all of that fails, try a restart.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
