Re: Take Ownership of file

Hi Brink,

really nice tutorial, awesome ...

sorry to ask :

... "INFO: This will add Take Ownership to the Context (right click) menu for all folders and files in Vista, except Application files." ...

is it only applicable for a folders and files ?

i have a problems with External Drive (USB External Drive 180GB), it said "Access Denied" and the status of Ownerships is "unknown", i did change the ownership, but still received message : "F:\ Access Denied" but so far haven't try the manual step, i did try the auto step.

FYI : i used Windows Vista Business 32bit, and my External Drive is working find when i plug in PC with Windows XP SP2

I'll post again after i try the manual step.

Thank you

Windows Vista Business 32bit for work at office, Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit for playing Games at home...

Re: Take Ownership of file

Hi Zchelter,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Sorry, the Automatic way with the added Context menu will only work for files (except application files) and folders.

Method Two step 2, will allow you to take ownership of the External Dive manually.

Re: Take Ownership of file

Ok, I am so computer illiterate on this stuff, I think I need pictures...haha. I am trying to delete the msn folder. Been having issues with the messenger part. But it keeps saying I need permission to delete it. Can it be deleted? And is there anyone that can walk me thru this step by step because all that up at the top was Greek to me. Thanks in advance. And my apologies for not understanding this.

Hi prblmchild65,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Did you already uninstall Windows Live Messenger from Programs and Features?

What is the full path and name of the folder you are wanting to delete?

Re: Take Ownership of file

Ok have uninstalled. And had a friend talk me thru the process. Nothing seemed to work. So, I fixed the problem I was having by just creating a new profile under msn messenger. So far, the problem is gone. But, thanks to a wonderful friend, I now have this site so that I can see about fixing a few minor glitches I have been having. Thanks for everything.

Re: Take Ownership of file

This did not work for me, none of the options worked.

I have a folder, not a system folder, that will simply not allow me to access. My computer is my personal computer so my account is the set admin for it.

The folders are:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\<steamid>\garrysmod\garrysmod\lua_temp\autorun
&
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\<steamid>\garrysmod\garrysmod\lua_temp\weapons

I tried every method mentioned, I did the automatic, but instead of getting that command prompt screen with the successes, it was a very brief window with a failed message.

I tried the manual command prompt method, but it simply told me it was an invalid argument (I think that only works for files?)

The security tab/ownership tab thing didn't work either. I followed the instructions in the Windows help tab about taking ownership of a folder. That didn't work either.

Please advice.

Re: Take Ownership of file

Hi Raylisen,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

You might give it a try in Safe Mode to see if you are allowed access there.

Another option that work better for you is to use the free program Unlocker on it. Instructions on how to use it are at the site below to. It only works on the 32 bit version of Vista though.

UNLOCKER 1.8.6 BY CEDRICK 'NITCH' COLLOMB

Hope this helps,
Shawn
