Re: Startup Programs - Enable or Disable

Hello!
I have two questions:
1. When the comp boots up and the Microsoft logo pops up, there is no (ping) sound. Also, the Continue UAC prompt neither. How do I enable the sound?

2. I used Method 3, which is the Registry Editor. Can you check out my startup programs and tell me which one I can disable without negative effects on my comp operation?

Thanks.

Re: Startup Programs - Enable or Disable

Hi Bennys,

Q1) If you mean the startup sound, it isn't a ping sound in Vista. You can look at Method One (step 3) for how to turn it on though in this tutorial.

Sound Scheme

I'm not sure what you mean with the UAC prompt though. It does not usually appear at startup by default.

Q2) Your attached image is no longer available. Are you deleting the attached files from your User CP? Doing so will cause them to no longer be available in your posts that you have them attached in.

The safest method is Method One with Windows Defender. This way you can just disable them to see how things run without them. If not well, then you can go back and enable it again. You can also lookup the listed startup program at the CastleCops link in the Information box at the top of the tutorial, or Google, to see what it is for.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Startup Programs - Enable or Disable

Ahhh...thanks.
Q1: Solved. Stupid me, I muted the volume.

Q2: Ahhh...thanks for the new info. I didn't know that. I removed the attached image from the USER CP. No wonder why you couldn't see the screenshot from my previous posts.
Tell me if it works this time.

Re: Startup Programs - Enable or Disable

LOL, I've done that a few times with the Mute button.

Yes, the image works great now.

I do not see anything out of the ordinary that should not be there in the startup list, but I would recommend Method One with Windows Defender. This way you will be able to enable it again if it turns out you needed it. If you delete in the registry, the only way to fix it may be with a System Restore.

Only you really know what all you have installed and connected to your computer, so it's almost impossible for me to tell you what you do and do not need to have running at startup unless it's just something obvious that stands out as junk. I would look up each EXE file at CastleCops that you do not know what program it is with to help determine if you want it running at startup. Afterwards, disable any one you do not want as a test to see how things run without it.

Re: Startup Programs - Enable or Disable

Thanks. The CastleCops link doesn't work any more. Neither does Googling it works. I think the StartupList index has been removed. Oh well..I'm going to use the Windows Defender method and see how it works.
Thank you.

Re: Startup Programs - Enable or Disable

The link works for me, but it is very slow. They may be overloaded right now. Be sure to type in the full name of the listed EXE file for Google. Strange, you should get enough results back to help determine what program it belongs to.

Hope it goes well for you.
