Windows 7 Upgrade Program

"As early as December 10, 2008, even before the Windows 7 Beta 1 Build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400 was reportedly signed-off internally, Microsoft approached OEM partners in an attempt to gather feedback for a Windows 7 Upgrade Program.

The giant manufacturer is planning a remake of the Windows Vista Express Upgrade Program, but this time with Windows 7, according to MyDrivers. The project does not have an official name, the Redmond company referring to the initiative as the Windows 7 Upgrade Program.

However, just as Vista Express involved offering consumers a reason to buy Windows XP preloaded computers with the promise of reduced costs for the jump to Windows Vista, so the new program is designed to offer cheaper Windows 7 upgrades for Vista-machines purchased ahead of the release of Win7.

In order to qualify for the Windows 7 Upgrade Program, consumers will have to purchase Vista-PCs within the initiative's timeline, with each OEM machine complete with a security certificate (COA) and with a genuine copy of Windows Vista. According to Microsoft, the Windows 7 Upgrade Program is accessible only to the general public. Business users will not be able to take advantage of the discounted Win7 upgrade prices.

At the same time, only select Windows Vista SKUs will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 via the program, namely the Home Premium, Business and Ultimate editions. Computers with Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Starter, and Windows XP will not qualify for the Windows 7 Upgrade Program. Essentially, machines with Windows Vista Home Premium can be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional, and Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate."

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Program

I don't know - I am following development of this OS extremely carefully, and it is by far more stable than Vista ever was when I was testing it. Of course, I got in on Vista testing after the Betas came out, so I don't know how Longhorn really performed, but I did run it a couple of times.

Windows 7, to me, is what the OS should have been like after XP - XP was a nice facade on 2000, but W7 is no facade on Vista. It is stable, and I can only crash it if I try to play Mass Effect

Strange, never had any problems with Vista (Ultimate) in either x86 or x64 flavours.

Anyway, HO HO HO - Merry Christmas

I had many problems in Vista - but it was always because I wanted to try something new and it wouldn't work quite right lol....

I beta test a lot, so I broke many Vista installs while trying to force compatibility between apps that were not meant for Vista and my desktop....

I've been hearing good things about it. A guy on another forum claimed he installed Windows 7 on an XP class machine with only 1/2 GB ram and it ran smoothly. Vista Home Premium 32 bit is ok on a 2 GB PC once you beat it into submission. I was looking around for a new PC but I may hold off until it comes with W7 preloaded.

Vista is starting to look like Presentation Manager 1.3 .. the step they needed to go through to get to PM 2.x

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Program

Why not just merge the forums?
BTW, that's a terribly written article.

The requirements for both Forums are different. The Window 7 Forum is the best, statistically speaking on the net. Vista64 is THE forum for 64bit users. Why mess with perfection.

As for the article, you may be right, but you read it didn't you LOL
