Web blackouts in protest to SOPA and PIPA

Today, January 18th 2012, numerous websites are having a 24 hour 'blackout' in protest to the two newly proposed bills: SOPA and PIPA.

Some of the biggest names on the net are participating in the protests, including Google, Wikipedia and Craigslist.

Here is a few of the blacked out websites:

As you can see, there's a lot of big names there.

Well, I have been spending the entire day specifically browsing Wikipedia, just to be different! They have deliberately left it open so that you can access it if technically knowledgable.

There are a multiplicity of ways! Here are the ways I know of. I have specifically used all of them:
  • Use the mobile version at en.m.wikipedia.org.
  • Use one of the mobile Wikipedia apps.
  • Use a different language version of Wikipedia.
  • Use simple.wikipedia.org.
  • Disable Javascript.
  • In the time before the overlay loads, use Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C quickly.
  • Right click > View Source.
  • Save the HTML file, and view it in Word (the overlay disappears!)
  • View the Google cache.
  • View the Wayback machine cache.

Nope. It is a full version (english language only). Size is between 6GB - 6.5GB depending, and expands to about 32GB (apparently).

Sopa and Pipa bills postponed in US Congress

The US Congress has halted debate on two contested anti-online piracy bills.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid delayed a vote on the Protect IP Act (Pipa) scheduled for Tuesday.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith then said his panel would not consider the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) until a compromise was reached.
