Vista told me on Monday that my computer had new updates available. So, being the normal computer guy I am, I looked to see what they were. Mostly Security stuff for the system. So, I said sure lets update. Well, in the process, Vista turned off my system restore, and now takes about 10 min to come up after a reboot or shutdown. When I try to run or load programs, the system hangs up, and task manager has it at 100pct CPU use. Now I am going to do a total format and reinstall. My printer does not even work correctly now and it is only 3 months old. It ran great when I first got it. I think I am going to load up vista again and totally turn off the updates so it does not even temp me. OMGosh I don't want to but only thing I can do. TY Microsoft for wasting yet another weekend on redoing my computer.

Hi warhascome,
Welcome to the Vista Forums. ![]() From what source did you receive these updates? Microsoft generally releases updates on the 2nd Tuesday in the month (AKA Patch Tuesday), the last being Tues 9/4/08 and the next being Tues 13/5/08. Unless something urgently needs fixing, Microsoft waits until then before releasing patches. The only updates that it releases in the interim period are those for Windows Defender (WD), KB915597. On my system, there have been 5 definition updates for WD, but there have been no other updates. As far as I am aware, there is no difference between the 32-bit version (which I run) and the 64-bit version as regards the issuing of updates, but if anyone who uses a 64-bit system can clarify this it would be helpful. Also, what updates have been released for the 64-bit version since 9/4/08, and on what date. I am not interested in the optional updates, just the important and recommended ones. In particular, were any reported for Sun 20/4/08 through Tues 22/4/08. Dwarf |

They are the latest from the automatic updates in Vista. I just kept telling it, no, I don't want to install them right now. So, finally, I installed them on Monday, which most of them were Vista Security ones. So, I figured it can't hurt. Most be important. Low and behold, it did hurt, and now my system is on a 10 min boot time. I tried to load Microsoft simulater deluxe, and my system had not even gotten thru the partial install from the first next button and it froze up.
It is not a slow computer either. AMD X2 AM2 6000+ 4 gigs of Corsair dominator memory 2 74 gig raptors in Raid 0 2 8800GTX 726mb each in SLI for total 1.5G memory So system speed and such is not an issue. |

When you haVe decided to do a clean Installation, you can try this just to save time.
Manul System Restore! Insert the Windows Vista DVD and press a key when prompted to load WinPE. or Press F8 Advance Boot Options, "Repair Your Computer" When the DVD is loaded, press Next and then click "Repair your computer." Wait for the system to scan for operating systems and then click next. First try to do a System Restore to before the problem occured; however, if there are no restore points available or if System Restore fails, proceed to step 5. Click on "Command Prompt" and then type the following commands: c: cd windows\system32\config ren default default.old ren sam sam.old ren security security.old ren software software.old ren system system.old cd regback copy default ..\ copy sam ..\ copy security ..\ copy software ..\ copy system ..\ Close the command prompt window and restart the computer. |

Well,
I decided not to whipe the computer. As for other aswers to your solutions. I did try repair and that did no good. So, what I did was make another Admin acount, save my desktop filesto a folder on C drive. Delete my original profile. Then went into the program area and started to clean house on programs I don't use anymore. Freed up some HD space. Also with free space got some better speed out of it. But just deleting the old user profile, it made it run faster after reboot. Maybe something was corrupted. Not sure at this point. But thanks or all the help. |

Give Windows Update another try since you have done a clean install you should not have any issues now, without them your computer will be seriously unprotected by the latest virus`s and web threats.
AV and Firewalls use Windows to protect your computer and wont be enough to stop them because unless you keep upto date with Windows Updates Virus`s and Worms can slip though these Windows flaws bypassing your AV and Firewall completely. |
