Re: Deleting old Update Backups

Hi Brink,

Its independent of Task Scheduler and can be run at anytime.

Steven,

If I remember correctly, does this enhanced Disk Cleanup version only allow you to select items to be cleaned for when you have Disk Cleanup scheduled next to run in Task Scheduler?

Re: Deleting old Update Backups

Thank you Steven,

It does not seem to do anything after I check the items and click OK. Am I missing something somewhere?

Re: Deleting old Update Backups

Hi Brink,

Yes, you need to open a Administrative Command Prompt before running Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

I forgot about UAC interfering with the command when its run manually, I normally use this short-cut for launching the clean-up using the right-click "Run as Admin"...

Re: Deleting old Update Backups

Ah, thank you Steven. That's what I was missing. It ran fine through the elevated command prompt.

You should write up a tutorial for How to Use the Enhanced Disk Cleanup in Vista.

Did you ever find where you heard about it? I think it was from a Microsoft page since I have a few of these for different parts of the system...

Steven
Honestly? I think it was at the How To Geek - when I was trying to find a better way to run this disk cleanup, before I opted to start using CCleaner.

However, your discussion with Brink about Task Scheduler and running as admin reminded me of another cute little trick.

You can make any shortcut run as admin all the time without ever *asking* you to do so - the trick is to create a task scheduler entry for that shortcut.

Create a new task, under the General tab check Run with highest privileges, under the Actions tab add a new action to run that program, and under Settings tab check Allow task to be run on demand.

Voila! Now you can run the shortcut with elevated privileges *without* getting UAC prompts.

Re: Deleting old Update Backups

Hi folks: I have no idea what was posted here. I have over 16 + backups on my external drive. I have the comp. set to auto backup once a week.

The question I have (and maybe its answered here but I'm not understanding) is can I delete the old backups from my external drive? Maybe all except the current month?

Thanx!

-frizz
ps. I back up the entire C drive once a month using Acronis. I keep at least 3 months worth of those. The backups above are the ones that are automatically backed to the external by the OS

Thanx for the reply Steven. Insted of using the extended disk cleanup feature, I use CCleaner that serves the same purpose (I think).

Good thot tho.
