Re: wdows update

Humm, something running seems to block the update system.
Disable your firewall and check if it works.
Could come also from the AV software.

Re: wdows update

thank you Sid ...........but I did try disabling firewall and virus, to no avail, did not take out windows defender tho cause it is a pain, the more I see in vista the more I remove, I have disabled system restore for my acronis disk clone, account control, windows explorer for firefox...I found windows provides access to updates thru that wonderful iso system (sarcasm) so I will try that and add update to the removed pile

Re: wdows update

I have none of those disabled not now on my current machine and not before on my P4 3.2 GHz Prescott CPU based machine with an ATI x1650 Pro video card and a 120 GB IDE hard drive.

Patience is a virtue.

In the meantime, have you by chance turned off the BITS service?

Re: wdows update

Found a way ...while I could not download any of the 10 pending updates I found I could look at them and I right clicked on the first one, chose "view details" and there was a link to microsoft, that took me to a download page and I was able to download and install the file, I did the same with the second one ( KB950759 and KB950760). I then went back to windows update and was now able to download the other eight normally. Evidently some thing was defective with one of the files most likely the first one 759. Your bit question, I have the bit locker turned off because I do not use encryption. If you meant the bit system vista windows update uses, I guess did have it turned off because I had the update program turned off, I would check daily for new updates downloading only security issues since my cd rom driver was deleted some weeks ago. Since that may have been the cause I put it back on and stipulated do not download. Today I noticed it had downloaded and installed a file anyway so I turned it off again. I want say Microsoft policy needs change but that would sound superior and I am certainly not, any expertise I have came from plain experimentation. Thanks to you Sid for your help...

I had this same problem when I installed SP1, and was able to fix it by deleting the filters in the registry. This week, there was another Windows update, and not only did I lose the dvd device, I lost all my memory card readers, and the usb 2.0 port - I think they are all on the same device. I corrected the dvd problem with the registry fix again, but couldn't even find the other devices in device manager (unlike the dvd problem - could still see that device). I restarted the pc several times, and finally went to bed. This a.m., got up and completeley powered-down the system. When I powered back up, there were my card readers.

What the heck? Is this a Vista problem, or is it something with the HP Pavilion computers? Anyone know?

Connie

Re: wdows update

most likely a conflict between drivers and SP1 - this is a *widespread* problem. Thankfully I never encountered it but I know plenty of others that have.

Re: wdows update

this weekend HP pushed an NVIDIA "Security Patch". When it was done, my Display Adapter defaulted to "Standard VGA Adapter" and nother I could do, including reloading original NVIDIA driver helped.

Finally, I had an epiphany and remembered that Vista let you easily restore from a checkpoint and failed back to Friday morning last week. That restored my monitor and adapter however now caused a real annoying problem.

I cannot click on any hotlink and go to the site. When I click a link, Explorer opens but sites there. If I am on a page, like this forum, and click a link, it opens a new tab but just sits there blank till I close it. But, and this was odd to me, the blank window it opens is active meaning that if I type an address into the address bar it works.
Wierd, got any clues?

Quad Q9300
NVIDIA 8800GT
4GB RAM

Thanks
Tim

Re: wdows update

you could try Internet Explorer - Reset and see if that helps.

Re: wdows update

John,

Thanks, I went to do the reset but it concerned me that it might be drastic; it it did make me look further down that path tho. And, in looking further down that path it suggested looking at the Add-Ons. I ended up finding several Add-ons from unknown publishers. Once I disabled those, it appears to work.

I didn't equate those add-ons to the hotlink issue. Thanks for the tip.
