Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

Running a fairly new (6 mos) HP Pavillion dv6646us. 2 G RAM, AMD Turion 64 x2. nvidia GE Force 7150M w/ 64M dedicated RAM, 735M shared RAM 160 GB HD. 3.0 Windows System Experience Index. Currently running Home Premium SP1. I own a copy of Ultimate SP1 I got from attending a Microsoft release seminar. I tried loading once and it hung part way through and I gave up... will really buy myself anything upgrading, or will I cause my system to run slower and bog down... Thanks for any feedback... This is a great site BTW... I've already been using some of the tweaks I found here with much success...
Thanks

re: Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

Hi Jlhawk,

It really just depends if you want or need the extra features in Ultimate vs Home Premium. When I made the switch to Ultimate, I did not notice any performance hit. Since you have a newer system you should not either. If you do, you can always just turn off the feature that is causing it though.

You can compare the editions here to help you decide:

and

Windows Vista: Choose an Edition

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

Thanks... there does not seem to be a whole lot of difference between them, so I'm not sure just yet what I want to do...

Re: Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

jlhawk,

I would say that the main features that Ultimate has that Home premium does not are a Complete PC Backup and a animated DreamScene desktop background.

Re: Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

Exactly, and since I run my own backups, and typically use my own photos as Desktop wallpaper, neither really would dictate I do the upgrade... any idea how much more disk space the Ultimate version uses?

I have not measured it, but I believe it's only a few gigs at most more.

Re: Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

I may give it a shot then... On the one hand, I'd like to try it and see what it's all about, on the other, I hate to mess with a system that works quite well...

Re: Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

Well, if you have enough free space (about 40 GB) on your hard drive, you could create another partition to install Ultimate on instead without touching your current Home Premium install. If you do not like it, then you can just simply delete the partition and extend your Home Premium C: partition back into it for one large drive again. If you do like it then, you can run both or do a clean install with Ultimate.

Create Partition:
Disk Management - Shrink Partition

Delete Partition:
Disk Management - Delete and Extend

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Is it worth my while to update to Ultimate?

That could be a viable option... I'll have to give that some thought...
