SP1: can't get hotmail from different accounts

Installed SP1 late last week and I'm quite unhappy with it. Stupid SP turned all the start up items and proccesses on, that I'd spent weeks filtering through and turning off. I've turned off pretty much everything, yet my computer takes about twice as long to boot up as before. I HATE that stupid icon they've used to replace the hourglass, because it's ALWAYS there.

In addition, the newest oddity is only the 1st person to login can get their hotmail without a reboot. If I login under my username and get hotmail, then my wife switches user and tries to get her hotmail she can login, but can't view her inbox. The opposite is true if she logs in first and I switch user.

Who knows what else this SP screwed up but I haven't found yet. Anybody else have this issue and figure out a fix?

Not a problem for me....

Have you perchance disabled a service that SP1 has now made mandatory in order to use Fast User Switch and online credentials?

I have no idea, do you know which one that might be? I can't even sign out of it to try relogging in.

By the way, I tried to system restore, and with my whopping 1TB HD, somehow system restore only had 2 restore points, both of which are after I did the SP1 update.

I...

off...

Seriously, how could MS continue to bungle about their premeire OS? This is absolutely ridiculous.

No offense, but I am pretty sure this is not an M$ issue - after all, by your own admission, you were going around and disabling things left and right to get it working the way *you* wanted.

I have installed Vista more times than I can count - and I have only had issues with SP1 *not showing up in WU* on my older machine that had drivers installed that Vista SP1 did not like.

Are you perchance dual booting? Also, maybe next time you should install Vista and all updates prior to tweaking your system....

I agree with Johngalt, the few hundred machines I have installed Vista on have had no minor or major issues compared with XP even on old and dogy hardware/software....

What Antivirus software do you have installed also what registry cleaner/system tweaker programs have you used, including Vlite?

Thanks for the replies. I was running Spybot and Kapersky antivirus. They seemed to be overlapping each other and I now only have Kapersky.

Pre SP1 I eventually got to the point where I ran msconfig and disabled all startup items and had no issues. When I did that post SP1 (which I did since SP1 enabled ALL my startup items), I ran into this problem with hotmail. I re-enabled everything that had the MS stamp on it and was just able to get my hotmail from both accounts so my problem was user induced.

That said, I've always considered the startup items under msconfig as optional items that add some sort of functionality at the expense of speed. There's never been a start up item that had to run or my computer would not function properly. Now, apparently that is no longer the case.

I can't talk to hundreds of computers since I've only got one running Vista 64. If they want to market this to the masses, then I shouldn't have to be an expert that installs this on hundreds of computers to make it work. I will say, that I'm glad these forums have such experts willing to help out the more casual user though!

Thanks much.
Mike

Hmmm - Kaspersky Suite, or just Kaspersky AV? If just AV, then no, Spybot and KAV are not overlapping - each provides a completely different set of protections.

RE: SP1 and an MS startup - well, there is one thing to remember - you consider *all* startups as unnecessary, but as you found out some of them are necessary but default. In your case what you should do is research, research research - you have to *know* what is necessary and what is not before you go and start disabling things.

Almost every tweak site will tell you - if you plan on tweaking, tweak one thing at a time and reboot and assess performance - sure it takes longer, but after having done that for many major tweaks you'll have a good idea what can and cannot be tweaked.

Also, this is an Operating System - you have to expect that some things were *meant* to run at startup so as to provide you with certain functionality. Again, this is where the research part comes into play.

Now, don't get me wrong - I am not saying you're an idiot and nor am I saying that tweaking is bad - it's just that you'll see many inconsiderate users out there posting blogs and instructions on how to tweak something without giving you a good analysis on *why* you should tweak, and furthermore, without giving you an analysis of what could go wrong if you tweak a particular setting.

A *great* example - in Vista Ultimate, there is a wonderful built in screen capture tool called Sniping Tool - works great. However, guess what? If you disable Tablet PC services, Snipping stops working. It is *directly dependent upon TabletPC service. Of course, if you go into the Services and see that running, and you don't have a TabletPC, then your instinct is to turn it off.

Since Vista has been RTM for over 1.5 years now, most of us have been there and done that - we've made the same mistakes before, so it is far easier to do the research before hand rather than using the trial and error method to achieve your desired results.

Oh - and don't fall for the RAM optimizer trap - it's bogus.

Ugh. My hotmail login problem is back with all the MS startup items enabled. No idea why it's doing this now, only know that it started after SP1.
