Update error 8024402c [solved]

I spent a couple of days messing around with this. Running an out-of-the-box new Compaq with Vista home basic, nothing installed yet, windows update would stop and message the 8024402c error. There is alot of help for this issue. I learned how to set a proxy, import the proxy unto my netsh>winhttp>; how to set the BITS and folder settings etc etc.

what i did not try until the third day was to TURN OFF the firewall. All i did was turn off the windows firewall and update worked fine. Same with defender, all good.

sometimes the simple answers are more perplexing. thanks you to all who post here so i thought maybe i can return the favor to someone.
