dmex got the same answer for everything :P

Here's your problem(s)

You have several required services not running.

You have the service running, but its not for your account.

Here's how.

Run ->MSCONFIG

Now, go to the Services Tab.

Make sure that:

Background Intelligence Transfer (otherwise referred as BITS)
Windows Modules Installer (WMI)
Windows Installer (WI)
Windows Update
WMI Performance Adapter

are enabled.

Now that that's done, you still might have a problem.

Go to Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services

Now re-read the top services and go on each one of them and Rightclick -> Properties->Logon-> LOCAL SYSTEM ACCOUNT (The Top one) Is CHECKED.

The bottom one may not function properly. Hope your problems solved!

Yep, The latest WU package resets everything you just explained but does it automatically so you dont need to explain anything other than downloading and installing the WU package

In future you can either reference the latest WU package or reference users a tool created especially for resetting WU automatically

AU Check - Home
(resets all WU components and download/installs the latest WU package below)

Re: Windows Updates failing last 3 -4 days

The fix is simple. Either reinstall Vista and get SP1 directly with allowing ANY of the Windows updates to install or do a restore off the disk back to before the updates were installed and then get SP1, before ANY of the updates are installed. You may have to tell Windows to NOT install any updates until you approve them.

After rebooting from the SP1 install you can safely get the rest of the Windows updates. Microsoft recently made getting SP1 the first update you can get which helps with this problem greatly.
