KB940199 update error.

Hi I have different USB devices that i've plugged in and it comes up with "Windows needs to install driver software for your Unknown Device" so i click "Locate and install driver software(recommended)" Later it says "Windows couldn't find driver software for your device", I click "Check for a solution" and it comes up with "Download updates for Windows Vista". It asks "To solve this problem, do the following:" and I click
"Go online to download and install an update from the Microsoft Download Center website:
Update for Windows Vista, 32-bit versions (KB940199) "

I go there and download it and it says "The update does not apply to your system".

WHAT THE HECK! I cliked the right download for my system, I have Vista Home Premium, 32bit.

Can someone please help me?

Re: KB940199 update error.

Hi, Shazzamy, and welcome to the forums.

It is possible that your system *already has* this update installed. Check in Programs and Features to see if it does or not....be sure the "Show Updates" checkbox is checked at the top.

Re: KB940199 update error.

In that case, are you sure you have Vista 32bit?

Re: KB940199 update error.

I croped your image, uploaded it to our servers and relinked to it.

Since you are using a 32bit OS and the KB says it does not apply to your system, my guess is that the Infcache.1 file is not deleted or corrupted.

See Error message when you try to install a new hardware device on a Windows Vista-based computer: "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device" for information on what that download is supposed to do.

Which means that you'll probably want to contact HP to figure out why your system is doing this.

Re: KB940199 update error.

Thanks for the help! Also what would I tell HP about my problem? I sort of understand what the Hotfix does.

Re: KB940199 update error.

Explain everything to them as you did here- in fact, you can link them to this post if you do a live chat session or else converse by email - it will show that you have already taken some required steps and tried to install a hotfix recommended for this problem to no avail.
