After Vista SP1 - system restarts OK but nothing works for 20 minutes

Not sure where to start but I have a Toshiba Laptop with 2GB RAM, Vista Home Premium 32bit and I loved it - I thought all those people who hated Vista must be 'change haters' but then my system automatically downloaded SP1.

Then my problems started. Restarting for me is a problem. The machine restarts OK but then nothing works for about 20 mins. The control panel starts but is blank and says 'not responding'. The internet won't work, although MS Office products will work. When it finally does start working, everything works fine.

I have started to hibernate at night instead of shutting down because the time to wait is just annoying.

I have phoned Microsoft, they reckon its a hardware problem although I have my doubts because it was fine until SP1 was installed. The Toshiba help desk said that I have to do a system recovery and then if its still not OK they will analyse the laptop but this will mean I will be without it for 2 weeks - unfortunately I can't afford to not have it for this long because I am self employed.

If anybody can help it would be much appreciated.

I've never really had a problem with SP1, mine installed perfectly, and just boosted my machines performance.
What I would do is Remove SP1 and Reinstall it. If this does not solve the problem then I would recommend you contact Microsoft using a contact form, and see if they can help. Otherwise, I'm afraid, your stuffed.
I hope I helped

well, I wouldn't say Hayley nz is stuffed.

Just uninstall sp1 or revert back to a good restore point. Uncheck 'automatically download and install updates' and check the 'notify me when updates are available'. I find it's always best to know what updates you are installing and to have the option to choose. If your system runs fine without Sp1 then leave it at that. I found SP1 had issues with my system and I haven't installed it after a reformat/installation of vista - all is fine.

If you still have problems reinstall vista - it doesn't take long to do ( back up your personal files first )

Damo, I did not say she was stuffed, I said if reverting SP1 doesn't work, shes stuffed. And yes, she could reinstall Vista, its a quick process.
Please do not repeat what I said,
Much Love
Josh

I was actually confirming what you said - RE:SP1 ( do you really think I was using the content of your post and playing it off as my own idea when you quite clearly posted before me, C'mon ) .......and as you did not mention reinstalling vista I figured it should be said too.

'I'm afraid, your stuffed.' would suggest there was no other options when in fact there are.

Hi Hayley,

What is the model number of your laptop? There might be a update that you need to install from Toshiba before you install SP1.

I have a Toshiba Satelite A200 - unfortunately it came with Vista already on it so I can't just reload it, unless I can get it from somewhere else.

I will do a backup now - then uninstall SP1 and will let you all know how I get on.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hayley

The Toshiba should have come with a recovery disk that resets the laptop to factory setting, but, in some cases they skimp on that sort of thing. If they didn't provide you with a disk there might be a hidden partition that store an image file of your Hard drive and might , if you have the option, be able to use that.

Best to just to a clean install of Vista then install SP1 first thing.
