Hi,

If you already have an operating system on your pc, you can try running the setup file manually from the dvd drive.

Click Start Orb, click Computer, right click dvd drive, click open. Right click the setup.exe and run as administrator.

Usually this gives give the option to do an upgrade install - ( since you can't upgrade 32 to 64 - see if it would recognise that and give you clean install option) .

See tutorials for info about installing :

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-vista.html

this only works for same bit versions - you may find it interesting

Hope this helps

Hi,

When you say it won't let you boot from the disc - do you get your cd/dvd drive as an option when you select the boot pop-up menu?

Select the boot pop up menu by starting your computer and tapping F11 repeatedly till it says pop up menu selected . ( It's F11 on mine - it will say on your screen what it is for you - as soon as you see what it is , tap that key - you need to be quite quick )

Put dvd in drive , select dvd drive or cdrom drive from drop down boot menu, press enter.

When it says press any key to boot from dvd drive or cdrom drive , press enter.

Can you go into your existing Windows Installation without any problem ?

Wondering why it said Windows failed as opposed to Installation failed.

Must be asking you to repair using your 32bit dvd as the 64 isn't on there yet.

Best thing is to follow instructions - see this tutorial for what to expect

i can run windows vista 32-bit easily but thats what it says when i try to install the 64-bit edition, do i have to uninstall windows vista and re-install it with the 64-bit edition disc, or do i have to do something different?

My Computer

No, you do not have to uninstall it first - the x64 dvd should boot in to give you the screens exactly as in the tutorial

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-vista.html

As you have had a message asking you to repair, I suggest you put your 32bit dvd in and follow the steps it gave, which from your earlier post, were

1. insert your wondows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. choose your language setting, and then click "next".

3. click " repair your computer."

This may fix the problem so you can then boot from your x64 dvd and do the clean install.

ok i tryed exactly what it said and it brought me to a screen with several choices:

Start up Repair

System Restore

Windows Complete restore

Windows Memory Diagnostic tool

Command Prompt

i decided to choose start up repair, i did a little load thing then i restarted my pc with the 64-bit disc and i had the same problem as before. should i have done something else?

My Computer

Yes, something has become corrupted - often this can be cured by choosing a system restore to a point before that happened - you could try that - choose the earliest point you've got.

If that doesn't work, then a Windows complete restore will almost certainly do the job.

but if i try to restore my computer wont i lose everthing ive put on it, like my anti virus, games, tools, etc...? becuase i really do not want have to re download and set up my computer like the way it was.

My Computer

No, A System Restore just restores Vista's System settings - your own data, files and folders will not be affected - of course any programs that had been installed since that restore point will need to be reinstalled.

See this tutorial for what a system restore is and how it's done - you would be using method two - bottom of the page

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

Alternatively, you could try the Complete Restore - I have never done this myself , but I suspect it is like a repair install ( see below )and should not damage anything of your files and folders. ( It is always worth making external copy of anything reallly vital onto e.eg. cd/dvd/hard drive - you should do this every now and again anyway - just in case your machine dies on you.)

If you are concerned about either of those options, you could do this instead, using your 32bit dvd

You do realise that when you get to install the 64bit version , it will be a clean reinstall - that will wipe the drive and start again. You will certainly need to set it all up again after that.

You can make this easier by making a second partition, copying your data and setup files onto that, using what's on there for setting up after you have clean installed x64 onto your first partition . You will need to make sure you don't choose to reformat this 2nd partition during the installation process , of course - it is pretty straightforward.

i think i understand what you are saying but i currently am in the process of writing a paper and i want to make sure that when i save this paper and i do a system restore, that the saved file will not be lost. will it?

My Computer

No, a System Restore will not damage your own files and folders.

However, in unlikely event you make an error, or there is something like a power failure or some other unforeseen event, it would be wise to copy the anything vital, i.e. the work you are doing onto an external source e.g. a cd or dvd (or another hard drive if you have one).

Even if you are not reinstalling , you should always have a back up of anything irreplaceable .
