Vista - After latest auto updates, windows won't start

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and need help! Yesterday the latest Vista updates were downloaded to my computer. I didn't restart my computer after the updates were downloaded. When I turned on my laptop this morning, the Startup Repair window comes up because windows failed to start. I've run the repair several times, and it's unable to repair.
It lists the following problem details:

So, I see that part (if not all) of the problem is bad drivers. Why is this so and how can I fix it? I have a Gateway M-Series laptop (about 10 months old). Thanks!

first of all, can i ask did you get windows vista on a CD/Download or pre installed before purchase..

also, you mentioned that you did not restart you computer, did you click start menu and then shutdown, or was the system put into hibernation/sleep

When I've done a startup repair I get on option to do a system restore. Might work. I have a book on how to use Vista, the author suggest to turn off automatic updates. Instead have Windows set to prompt before before installing updates. BECAUSE MICROSOFT will release updates that don't have the bugs worked out. When you click the balloon that pops up you get a window that asks you do you want to install under the install button in smaller print you can click review updates. This will list the new updates that are ready to be downloaded and installed. Don't install any until you investigate the updates for issues. One website is askwoody.com. I do this and it's hassel but better safe than sorry. Good Luck.

To scousa4lyf: Vista Home Premium was pre-loaded on my laptop when I bought it. Also, when I turned it on yesterday, I booted up fine as if nothing happened. When I turned it off later and attempted to turn it back on, the same problem occurred. It's still not working. Prior to this problem, the laptop was shut down properly at the end of my workday. I didn't immediately restart after the updates were added.

To MarshallMoore: Thank you so much for your tip. I will certainly do this in the future. I know that updates have bugs, but disabling option didn't occur to me. Thanks for the website. I'd like to do this without losing any of the additions since purchase. Yesterday, everything was there running fine, so this is just some glitchy problem.

Bad drivers? Everything worked fine yesterday. Very puzzling.

what i would recommend (this is a bit time consuming)is, keep restarting the computer untill it boots up properly as you mentioned it did. and then find out what drivers/updates were installed.. (windows update and then click "view installed updates")

then post them here and i will do some digging for you to see if i can find out what may have happened..the chances are it is a bug as you said but it may have just been a bad install

then, find the recent update(s)and uninstall/roll-back the driver/software

if there are any security updates that were downloaded at the same as the rest, i would suggest leaving them in-place and see if it works. but if not and there are security updates, i would uninstall then and reinstall a.s.a.p after it reboots

if it works fine after installing the security updates, and the system runs smoothly, it may be better not installing the others.. unless there is a current issue with a driver you already had before the recently downloaded..

I've had a similar problem with installing windows updates and restarting as instructed and then failing to start up (updates KB953155 and KB957200.) I've tried the start up repair with system recovery and it doesn't work. I started up in safe mode (hit F8 before getting to the blue screen which tells you that start up failed) and then you can do system restore but select the option which lets you choose a system restore checkpoint. Vista makes installing windows updates a checkpoint, so if that was the most recent thing you did it will try to restore to that. Apparently microsoft doesn't consider that their updates could be the problem. Chose a checkpoint before the update and it should work. Hopefully this is helpful.
