Vista - Updater has no text

so i just installed vista on my new desktop today and when i go to updates all i get is icons and NO text where it clearly shhould be. i know i NEED updates but i cant see anything! if anyone knows where ican go to fix this or where to go to start installing them. i have problems with everything. i cant install anythign or load anythign cause i get errors and saying its not responding. so please HELP me find needed updates or how to fix my updater!
