update stops shutdown

Hello,

My computer hangs on Windows Security Update KB953155 which is the first of 4 updates that do not install. First, I had to shut the computer off when it was hung this morning and restart it. Then I ran AU check 78 and then ran windowsupdateagent. It seemed to work so I went back to WindowsUpdate and allowed it to find the 4 updates needed for installation. Now, it hangs again at 23% on the SecurityUpdate. I am guessing that it is probably not a good idea to keep trying to shut it down with TaskManager and by resetting the computer. Yesterday, I ran a registry cleaner after I first noticed the shut down problem. It seemed to help the speed but this problem persists. Oh yea, I clicked on "stop installation" and it does not help.

New info: I turned off the computer manually while it was hung and restarted in SafeMode. Then I restarted normally. Then I went to control panel and turned off automatic updates to notify me when updates are available. Later I got a notice and tried to allow an update of Windows Media that had not caused problems before. It hung and is still running on 49%. I also got a message (that I had seen before) that "Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed."

Re: update stops shutdown

Anybody -- I'm still having problems with update. It will download but it won't install. As I said, I have used the repair utilities repeatedly but it does not fix it. Since another problem is the Hosts error problem, I had guessed that I might have a malware problem. I have downloaded sysinternals diagnostics Process explorer and I have done Hijackthis and fixed whatever the online diagnostic said was most important. Still I cannot download and install an update. Also, I cannot get the Problem Reports in control panel to connect to their fix solutions. It says that I am not online but I am. I have been working on this every spare moment for a long time. I have also used PCTools scanner and AV + Threatfire scanner. The AV found a Trojan and, I told it to fix it. Still I am having lots of problems. I cannot reinsall OS because I have (had) a hidden partition with the OS and when I made a copy of the drive to another drive, I went to NTFS and, according to Acer online help, I changed the file system from FAT32 which had the backup OS and it will not work now. I have downloaded the PE Vista utility but it will not run because it says it doesn't have a driver for my DVD. The DVD is pretty generic so I don't understand this.
