Sometime after 24/11/08 I installed about 4 vista updates, after which boot and shutdown times greatly increased. By which I mean, when you get the green sliding bar when booting, pre-update I would get between 6 and 11 bar progressions, after update I got 50 to 51, before completing the boot.
I've now turned off updates completely and system restored back pre- 24/11/08, and alls well again.
From looking at these forums it seems I am not along with update issues.
I'll leave updates turned off I think.
DId this always occur at every bootup after the updates or just the initial times after the updates were installed? Some updates will be configured at bootup and take some time. Do you have SP1 installed at all? If you turn off automatic updates or notification then you should check the update center every once in a while as you might miss important or critical updates.
Well, it will say what update is critical or important or a security update in the windows update center. You can right click on an update and View Details about the updates and or go to microsoft and research it. Updates really shouldn't be problem makers but some of them might be and usually they will offer suggestions about problems on some at microsoft download center.
Hi airbot,
Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know if 32bit has similar update problem..? Also, do you know if windows defender automatic update causes similar system problems...?
As I do not have 64bit I wouldn't know. As for me, I only had some problems with updates before I installed SP1 then I haven't had any problems after. There are some specific updates that resolve issues with other updates being installed correctly, you should have those offered to you in windows update. Also, there are some updates you are supposed to install before installing SP1. Like I said, review the update details and or go to microsoft and do some research.
I would do the automatic updates and restart. What is the rush you are in? I shutdown my computer and walk away. I doubt you can't afford a few minutes of time a few times a month.
I use 32 bit and have no problems with updates and that includes Windows Defender ones, my machine is set to update automatically so will do the critical or important ones which are the ones you should do.
