hello,
I just built a new PC with Vista Ultimate 64 service pack 1 installed. When i run Windows update, it says "Windows is up to date" and no options for updates are available. There are no errors given. I am trying to install drivers for my graphics card (evga eGeforce 9600 GT in a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard) and when i restart I keep getting the Blue Screen of Death so I wanted to make sure and get all the latest Windows updates. The native Windows video driver works fine, but I want to use dual monitors.

Hi Roy,

Just in case you are not doing it right, Go to Control Panel, Check for updates, then on the blue panel left, click again check for updates.

For Hardware updates you are best off going to the Manufacturers web sites.

I hope this helps

Pooch

Hi pooch and thanks for the reply. I tried that and still no updates available. I also have a problem with IE. It keeps stopping. When I clear the temp internet files/history etc... it will work again for a little while, but then it stops again. I disabled protected mode/add ins etc... but it still does it. The error is "faulting application iexplore, faulting module mshtml.dll.

The native Windows video driver works fine, but I want to use dual monitors.

Hi, I had the same problem today - fresh installation of Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 on GA-965P-DS4 motherboard with Asus EN8800GT (nVidia). When trying to update the graphics card driver, BSOD appeared repeatedly.
Even Internet Explorer was permanently freezing and Vista refused to update (Vista is up to date msg).

I've just lost 6 hrs with it today (changing memory modules, trying to use original nVidia drivers (not Asus)) and updating motherboard's BIOS.
Finally I have formated hdd and installed Vista Business x64 instead. BUT I have disabled RAID in BIOS (I am using 3 HDDs - 1st is non-RAID and the 2nd and 3rd are in RAID 0 using built in motherboard feature (Intel ICH8R). Vista Business works normally, no problems with graphics card.
But when I enable RAID again, Vista will not start, BSOD appears shortly after Vista startup logo and restart follows immediatelly.

So it seems to me like a chain of problems but now I think the RAID is the main problem (driver or something else), not graphics card or Windows update. I will keep you informed how it continues.

I reinstalled Wupdate from the link Pooch posted and it updated fine. But when I rebooted, the PC would not boot, not even in safe mode. So I ran system repair with the Windows Disk, and now am back to where I started. I am going to selectively install updates and go from there. Thanks for the advice Pooch. At least I made some progress.

Did you use Xpress install to install your chipset drivers? and did you run it as described in your user manual?

I didn't use express to install chip set drivers. I just downloaded them from Gigabyte and ran the application. Should I use Xpress instead?

I dont really know, I was just wondering if this program would have managed to install the graphic driver. I am fairly certain that any problems that you are having now go back to your graphic card problem

If you still have no luck with the graphic driver it might just be worth doing a bios update
