Automatic sleep and hibernation gone after updates KB953155 and KB954154

Both sleep and hibernation worked perfectly according to the power options settings at their preset times before installing updates KB953155 and KB954154. Now, the power options do not work anymore, only the manual command works. I uninstalled those updates and also tried to make a restore from a restore point I made just before installing the updates. Windows makes an automatic restore point, also. I tried this one too, but nothing solves the problem. It is a desktop pc, and I use those functions all along the day when unexpectedly going out and coming in. I don’t know what else to do. Can you, please help? It seems that installing updates is the most unsecure and the highest danger for a computer.

Hi Pooch,

Thanks for your links. I read them thoroughly and followed all the tests except those regarding an unexpected waking up because that is not my case. I didn’t try the motherboard jumpers either because I haven’t opened the box since the problem came up. This is to say that I really did try hard because I do need that sleep and hibernation back to work, hopelessly.

I took the decision of not downloading Microsoft updates for Vista before they are at least four months old because I am convinced they cause unpredicted problems and Microsoft is irresponsible enough not to correct them or give advice on how to. I did look up on Microsoft’s sites before coming here and found nothing that would help; I did even post the same thread as here on a tech forum and got no answer until now.

However, from what I read in these forums I noticed that people here are much more helpful, so I will be really grateful if someone will tell me of a solution. Thank you.

Hey Neophile,

I have done some more research and I dont think that these two updates were to blame, perhaps just a badly timed coincidence.

Have a read here;
Windows XP Standby and Hibernate Problems Solved (finally … I hope) | Five Percent: Conserve a Little Energy

It is written for xp but dont let that put you off as the problems and answers are often the same.

There are a lot of links in this that probably need to be followed, if it doesn't solve your problems it will explain what your problem is about.

Let me know how you get on :)

Thanks Pooch, I'm going to explore all that. It will take me some time, but I'll answer you, be sure.

Hi Pooch,

Thank you again for the links. As you said, they do not solve the problem directly but they expose many causes and possibilities. It was very long following and reading them, experimenting and waiting for the sleeping time to pass, even if shortened, but at the end I could find out what applied to my case. It was the little µTorrent program for downloading BitTorrent files. Every time I stopped it both sleep and hibernation worked according with their settings, but still, it only started happening after those updates.

Thanks to your suggestions, my problem is solved. For now…

Happy New Year for everybody.
