Vista - Winders Defender and windows Update don't work

Vista x64 OEM Systems builders version (does this mean i'm screwed and can't ask MS for help?)

Windows defender can't check for definitions: Code 0x8024e001

Windows Update could not search for new updated: Code 80070424

ugh! I tried the suggestions here of manual dll registration, and i lost all the prior windows updates. They had all been up to date through November 1st. . .

I downloaded Defender manual installer, it does something, and says the system is runing normally. . but i can't update.

I really would like to just use windows update. . . any suggestions?

You can still ask them for help - if you have never called them before, try asking them to waive the fee since this is the first time you are calling....they did it for me 8 months after I first installed Vista....

I asked for email help. . . and will create a slipstream Vista SP1 and reinstall if all else fails. . . . I just bought a new build for my 16 yo daughter for christmas, and want the x64 OS to work as she is like the XW - woe is me if anything doesn't work for me the first time. . .

so far, Windows support has not found the issue. I think that an SP1 file is corrupt or missing, OR a virus has struck from the 32bit hard drive. . .

I am going to uninstall SP1, redownloaded it and hope the new update works.

Try the Windows Update reset and repair tool.

I can't even install Windows Update 3 as installation fails.

Background intelligent transfer service is not running, try and manually start the service by typing in the run box "services.msc" without the "", look for Background intelligent transfer service, should be right at the top. right click and start service and set to automatic, if it doesnt start then you need to restart your computer, try again

BITS was running. . . . XP Office 2003 also stopped updating. . . so for XP Office Update, I removed, and reinstalled Office 2003, reupdated office and all is well so far.

Between all the help here, on the web and through Microsoft, nothing worked, restore to last august didn't work, so I reformatted and reloaded, and reupdated and now it reworks. . .

oh well, sorry we couldnt help, i think it might have been malware, the error codes you have came back as the bits service wasn't responding or not running.

I also created a slipstream Vista x64 Business with SP1 from my OEM disk, and that didn't work. . . and if Microsoft can' fix it on the third suggestion, Malware is what I suspected as well, but I couldn't find it. . . Norton didn't find it, Avast didn't find it. . and with two OS on two different drives not working, i was not happy. . I am sure the issue is in the registry, with a redirect, or a switch, but I looked everywhere i knew about. . .
