LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

Ever since my little problem in this thread, Live Update pops up above the clock on the toolbar. It asks me if I want to install new downloads or updates (can't remember which), so I always click yes. However, maybe 3 hours or so later, the same message pops back up. Is this common when having to do a system restore? (Next time it pops up, I will take a screen shot.)

Edit: Here is the picture. Also I believe I posted in the wrong section(?)

Re: LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

Is the program expired??? That'll cause those constant popups. If it's not expired then try reinstalling Norton.

Does your clock has the correct date??? Sometimes things can happen which causes the clock to loose it's date. And...well Norton will constantly see updates.

By the way, what Norton program is it?

"Is this common when having to do a system restore?" - It shouldn't, but Norton, who knows.

Also, be aware that some Norton/Symantec products don't work nicely with Vista 64 - NAV 2008 comes to mind.

BTW, I'm not a Norton/Symantec basher, I've used Symantec products for years on Windows 98-Vista 32bit and had no problems until I went to Vista 64-bit, then I found that Norton Anti-Virus 2008 had issues under Vista 64, Which was confirmed by Norton/Symantec's tech support. Not sure if Symantec got the problem(s) sorted out in Norton Anti-Virus 2009 or any of it's other products so...

Re: LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

The program shouldn't be expired. I've only had the computer for 4 months and installed it after I purchased the computer. Yes, the clock has the right date. The box says Norton Internet Security 2008 looks like.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what NAV 2008 is.

Program worked fine until I did the System Restore, I'll have to do the reinstall like you suggested.

NAV 2008 = Norton Anti-Virus 2008

You might want to check with Symantec to be sure Norton Internet Security 2008 (NIS 2008) Is compatible with Vista 64. I know for fact that NAV 2008 wasn't, it had limited functionality - I could not right click a folder and do a manual virus scan. You can try this yourself, since NIS 2008 contains NAV 2008 to see if this problem is there. After right clicking a folder you should have the option to scan for viruses - see below image.

nav-right-click.jpg

If this option is not there, you have limited functionality. Can you do virus scans? Yes, you just can't do them manually by right clicking a folder or file. Note that this function IS available in 32-bit OS's (Operating Systems), i.e Vista 32/XP32

Re: LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

Another thing that comes to mind with regards Norton and your System Restore problem, I believe Norton has some type of Restore that breaks the Windows one when used.
I'd have to go searching to find out the info about this but in the mean time check out your Norton product to see, I do know that LiveUpdate caused quite a lot of problems in the past.

Re: LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

My apologies on the late response. The option to manually do a virus scan after right clicking on a folder does NOT appear. I have yet to reinstall the program -- should I still do it, or will this not solve my problem?

Re: LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

Reinstall - as Joan pointed out, the NAV system is not 100% compatible with System Restore, and as such, when you performed your System Restore, it quite possibly broke something in NAV - quite possibly a setting in the registry as to when it was last updated, but that would very well make your system go crazy thinking every second that it needs to be updated when in reality it does not.

Reinstalling the program won't give you that option since the program is not fully compatible with Vista 64. That's also why it could be doing the constant update requests.

I would suggest you find a suitable replacement like Kaspersky's Internet Security 2009. It should work just fine. I use Kaspersky's Anti-Virus version 7 and it works like a champ.

Re: LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

According to the OP, it only started happening *after* they performed a System Restore. IOW, it worked correctly before that. Therefore, one would assume that it *is* compatible with x64.
