Vista/Printer problem

I have a new laptop running Vista Ultimate. I installed two printers, an HP Laserjet and an HP Inkjet. For the first three weeks everything went fine, then I got this message - "Spooler SubSystem App stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available." No solution was forthcoming.
I couldn't uninstall the printers because Windows told me there were no printers installed. Another message told me to "restart the printer spooler". A search of the help file revealed how to do this. I still could not print anything, same error message as before. However, I could now see the two printers in the Printers dialog box. Selected both and clicked delete. One was deleted but the other just 'hung' showing 'deleting....'
Time to talk to a technician.
He entered the registry (where I fear to tread) and deleted every entry containing HP 1020/1022 and HP 930c (lots of them). We were then able to delete the remaining printer. After running the driver plug and play program Vista automatically installed the 1020. Back to normal operation. Whew!

I will wait a bit before reinstalling the second printer.

I hope this is helpful to anyone experiencing a similar problem.
