Updating problems Vista x64: SP2 build 6002

I'd reinstalled Vista x64 and lots of important updates had failed after trying to update lots of times

I'd installed SP1, still no joy. I've installed what I thought was SP2 this morning, not sure about it but downloaded and installed it

Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave1.exe was SP1 and-

Windows6.0-KB948465-X64.exe from MS after searching at the site, looked to be a version of SP2

Those important updates have still failed and at bottom right over the tray is the legend-

Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy. Build 6002

That's a bit scary

Have I installed a public beta of SP2 please or a release candidate or something else?

And can anyone shed light on why I cannot get around 40 updates installed?

I've looked up the error codes and checked at the MS site for help and of course loads of searching

Thanks for any help offered

Peter

Ah on focusing on one thing at a time, I've found that the watermark is just a reminder that I'm running the beta, I'll not worry about clearing that then before upgrading to Windows 7, just needing help with those alarmingly persistent Failures to install Important updates please?

Re: Updating problems Vista x64: SP2 build 6002

Not to be lazy, but you know how the panic grips

I picked two of the Failed updates at random and downloaded the standalone update packs from MS and tried to update them

Both return a 'Don't worry about it...' message

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB941569)
Update Standalone Package
'This update does not apply to your system'

Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB957097)
Update Standalone Package
'This update does not apply to your system'

Will I need to go through each Failed update one at a time to see them all saying the same not-needed messages? Wilco if that's the only fix. It's the not-knowing

Sorry for being high maintenance all but I don't want to press on with installing my applications if at some point after I get a virus someone says "You got messages saying Important security updates weren't installed - and you ignored them?"

Hi Peter

Welcome to the Forum.

Why dont you let the updates install automatically It would seem to me that you are creating this chaos all by your self.

On the upside Service Pack 2 is cumulative, that means that it already contains all previous updates which should answer your question

Why dont you let the updates install automatically

Hi Pooch thanks, yes I have done that of course and now I don't need any updates Vista tells me.

But if you see what I'm reporting above, Important (the important word gets my attention so early in the install) updates are showing as Failed. I'm happy that I don't need any updates as that's what MS Update is telling me. It's confusing me (yes I don't need much help with that) as to why then there are many updates showing as failed.

If they're showing as attempted-but-failed updates (Show Updates) but they're not in fact needed - then I wonder why they're even showing as failed? No need to be seeing those failed reports as they are not needed, wondering why then does Vista show me them, that's why I'm being cautious with no applications installed. Saves time if I'm going to need another reinstall.

It would seem to me that you are creating this chaos all by your self.

Ok you're entitled

Hey Peter,

It is perfectly normal for some updates to fail, Vista normally (not always) tries again at a later date so these updates do eventually install

Sometimes when I have new installed there has been a massive failure rate but it has always sorted itself out in the end

Unless you are having problems I would advise you to let the auto update do the job itself. confusing as it can be!!

Main thing is your system seems to be OK now

I hope that this clarifies things a bit

Phew it's not just me then

In my similar screenshot I gave up trying to get all the Failed entries in one shot, on 1600x1200 there's two screenfuls aaaggghh

Thanks for sorting this out for me Pooch, very much appreciated is your help and time

No it turned out in the end that that wasn't the case for me, I've had to reinstall Vista x64 again and this times all updates are successful

I second-guessed Vista on installing last time and made some error on creating the name for my PC, ending up (with all those failed updates) with no Admin control over some parts of my system
