Vista - Windows Could Not Search for New Updates? Error 8007007E

I click "check for updates" and it gives me this message, along with error code 8007007E.

This has been going on since about January. My computer has not updated at all since then because it will not allow for it due to this.

I've searched information on this code and all I find is people getting it when trying to install or update some patch. I'm simply trying to even CHECK for updates. Maybe it's all the same problem. But I can't fix it.

I have disabled my virus scanner and firewall, restarted, and tried again. Still does the same thing.

Can someone please help?

It seems you probably have an internet connection failure.
What about your internet connection ? Do you have a proxy server ?
I've already encouter this error just because my proxy was not accessibe...

It's not an internet connection problem. I have a fine internet connection and am able to use it fully. And this has happened in more than one location where I have had a different internet connection that also worked fine. So that is not the problem.
