when windows update fails to install a KB, and it lists it as FAIL.

why wont it reinstall or re-download ?? Or does vista reinstalls it when you restart the computer?

Try it from the administrator account. Do you see custom and express?

Hello ollie.

Did you let it restart if it needed to and then try the update again?

I would think it tries again next time it checks for updates. It may be dependent on the reason it failed too. If it turned out the update was not applicable to your system, e.g. a driver older than your current, or if a later update contained the failed one too, I would hope it did not try again.

Why are some updates successful and some failed? They are supposed to be updated daily. I am not notified if it doesn't install the new updates. I am on Windows Vista.

There are many reasons why an update doesn't install but as some virus infections disable or interfere with update, I always recommend a complete virus scan after a failure.

Hi Linda,

As UKMedia has mentioned, updates can fail for a fair few reasons... Its usually caused by some updates having a dependency on an update you just installed, if you reboot and install the updates that failed then they will install successfully

If you have issues with other windows updates then let us know
