Of course your computer must be turned on to receive the updates. When you switch it off there is no access. As soon as you turn it back on it will check for updates automatically.:D

Same thing happened to me, except my windows update service stopped working and then asked to send info to M$. I tried to start update and the windows explorer crashed. Restarted PC and then ran update. found 1 optional update for gaming driver, applied this, ran find updates and it found a critical update, applied said update and the update service says no additional updates needed. I am somewhat disenchanted with the quality of the patches and updates the last few months. It seems that after a round of major patches that the system is usually a bit unstable for a few days. This is not the level of quality that I have been accustomed to over the years with M$.

To any Microsoft reps that read this - Come on guys....Lets put a little more effort into the patches and testing because at the end of the day this is just lousy customer service and before everyone flames me about M$ not being responsible for other products Microsoft is the one who touts their compatibility so lets not shift the blame to the loayal customers who chose to run Microsoft products. It is in M$ best interest to at least verify the compatibility with the major video, audio, etc products and drivers. No one says that all older products must work flawlessly but the current levels of Hardware and software drivers darn sure should.

:(

I don't know if it will help...but....you can always back the sound update out if you want to. I'm not sure it would hurt anything to leave it in. I'm just not sure what is going on with the updates but I plan to check on a regular basis until I see all updates downloaded and installed for at least 2 months without any intervention from me.

Let us know what happens for you.
