Hello Coolrunner, and welcome to Vista Forums.
I'm not sure of what your problem may be, but Windows Updates will not automatically install optional updates like drivers and such. You might also double check with this tutorial below about the settings.

i have the settings correct as in your link,thisw is for all including critical updates,but i still need to go to security center `[in xp i get a popup in the notification bar] but not on vista


Do you have the Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates box checked to get notifications?
