Solved If you haven't downloaded IE8 - Don't!

Just a little note, that IE8 came over with the latest updates from Microsoft and I downloaded it thinking that they improved it and ironed out all the previous problems with it, but they didn't! Big mistake!!!! I just recently went back to IE7 because there were too many websites that were causing me problems, plus my web printing was not working anymore for my HP printer and I found out that I could not print any of my cards in American Greetings!!!! I pay for that service and was very upset when I had a wedding to go to and could not print my card at the last min.!!!!! That was the staw that broke the camels back.....So, it was bye bye IE8, I am so disappointed in Microsoft for rushing this browser out to there knowing it has all these problems....Shame on you!!!!!

That happened to me -- I downloaded the updates overnight and when I went on Internet Explorer this morning, it had updated IE7 to IE8. I then started working with my favorites and it got all messed up. So, I imported my favorites from another browser into IE8 and once I got them all fixed like I wanted, I clicked on the desktop and then went back to IE8 and my imported bookmarks were gone! I have done this about 8 times already and each time they don't stay -- they disappear when you click off IE8 (you don't even have to exit the program -- just click on something else and the bookmarks vanish)! Also, I have deleted certain folders in favorites and the name still appears (it won't go away even though it says the folder can't be located). So many problems and hours and hours spent trying to straighten it out to no avail! I really wish I hadn't allowed the update now.

If anyone has a solution to why my imported bookmarks won't stay once I click away from IE or why I can't delete the name of a folder even though the folder isn't there, I would welcome it!

Thanks,
Carolyn

Yes, I have and there are still problems. I even added them to the list of websites that would automatically fix it for me when I go back into them. The American Greetings website didn't have a broken page, so I assumed it didn't need to be added, is that the case, or I am I doing something wrong? I also know that HP doesn't have the compatable ad on for web printing in IE8. Thank you

Not sure what is going on here with these two posters; but I'm wondering where they downloaded IE8 from or if they have the correct version for their OS. I have downloaded and installed IE8 twice successfully on the same computer.
First and second download was directly from M$ Site, and made sure I had the version for VISTA Home Premium SP1 x64. First I turned off all open programs (exit all those little icons) on your taskbar TURN OFF ANTI VIRUS and install.

PROBLEM: Unable to access one site after install....my bank. All others worked perfectly. :( Upon making several failed attempts to access, I took a long hard look at the Error Message I was receiving, and it showed IE8 was not on the list of accepted browsers.
SOLUTION: Sent an eMail to the Webmaster regarding the problem.
Uninstalled IE8 and went back to IE7 and waited two weeks.
Reinstalled IE8 using the same method outlined above and all was well.
No problems now. I'd suggest reading the instructions carefully prior to any install, and be sure you have the correct download for your OS. If you have a problem accessing sites after an install of IE8 that particular site or it's hosting site may not as yet included the new browser in their accepted list of browsers. If 'compatibility mode' fails, and you have checked your security preferences, contacting the Webmaster will usually resolve the issue. Just my 2 cents.

Like I said earlier in my posts that I downloaded it after it was sent to me by microsoft in the updates. I went back to IE7 and everything works great. I just recently got another update for IE8 sent to me and I am afraid to download it, thinking it is the same as the last one! Does anyone have any more information on if the problems with the web printing from HP and other non compatable sites have been resolved in this update that was just sent over by Microsoft??? I don't trust them any longer. I am just happy that the updates are not automatically being installed and that I have the option to do it myself.

I did not use either download that was sent to me in the 'Auto Updates'. I went to the M$ site directly and downloaded the the one for my OS. I notice you are using Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Be sure you download and install the correct version and you should be fine. Also exit all open programs and turn off your AntiVirus until after the IE8 install.

Jake,
If I go to the Microsoft website and download the version for my os, isn't that the same as what was sent to me from them in the auto updates?

hahahaha...who knows what they send? I always get my own files, and make sure in your case it says for Vista Home Premium SP1 (if you have SP1) 32bit. If you do not have SP1 on your OS don't use that one.

Jake,
Ya, you got that right! I use to have such faith in Microsoft, LOL! I do have SP1 downloaded. All of my updates since I got this computer have gone very smoothly. I just found those little errors in IE8, but it was really inconvenient. Especially when I pay for american greetings cards and not to be able to print really set me off. Maybe, if I called them they would have an answer. I do want to try and download IE8 again because I know it is better than IE7 with the new features it has, but I have to make sure it works for me....
Thanks

addiesanti,
I can understand your frustration with your paid subscription to American Greetings and the non-print issue for sure. As I stated I could not access one of my online banking sites after my first install (banks fault, not IE8). Why don't you just contact their Webmaster, and be sure their site is up to snuff on IE8 before you try again. Then, get the download yourself, be certain it says for Vista Home Premium x32, and read the install insructions from M$. Be certain to turn off all open programs including the AntiVirus for the install; as AV Programs have a habit of changing the security settings on files and that can defitnitely bork an install or corrupt a necessary file without you even knowing it. The AV will turn itself back on upon reboot after the install.
Best of luck to you,
Jakeman97 :D

Jake,
Thank you! I am going to do that. I didn't turn off my antivirus when I did the first install of IE8. I am never sure how to do that. I have webroot. When I click on the icon, there is an option to shut down. Is that what I do? Also, one more quick question. If Microsoft sends me the update for IE8 and it is the wrong one, won't it not install on my OS? I would think it would tell me that I am installing a version not compatable with my OS?
Thanks

addiesanti,
To turn off your open programs look at the little icons on the lower right side of your desktop and right click on each one of them and either hit 'exit' or 'close whichever the case may be. Do this only after you have the IE8 download on your desktop and are ready to install. One of these should be an icon for an active AntiVirus.
Some you cannot turn off like your 'Volume Control Center' or 'Add& Remove Hardware Safely'. Do not worry about the latter two. Turn off yoiur Printers too. If you are unable to find your AV here goto Control Panel>Security Center double click to open and disable your AV here. Do not panic your AV will restart itself on reboot after IE8 install. I recommend you do not opt for auto updates during the install go to Windows update after everything is running. IE8 will install it's own updates during the install and this is O.K.
Best of luck,
Jakeman97

Jake,
The only things I have with icons to the right, are my antivirus, sidebar, realtek hd audio manager ( I don't even know what this is?), cyber power power panel (this is my electrical backup system in case of a power outage), num lock, caps lock and scroll lock. Ok, so all this has to be closed? thanks

addiesanti,
O.K. download IE8 to the desktop and just exit/turnoff the antivirus. Leave the others alone and you are good to go.

I did a manual install of IE8 about a week ago. Sofar no crashes or any website incompatibility. Only problem I have found is that it is running slower than IE7 did.

Hi all:

I did download IE8 - ouch!!!

As I use notepad as a text editor (html) (xml) works for me - that is I did.
IE8 fixed that. I even downloaded a text editor specifically for HTML - even that only partly worked.

Solved my Problem - uninstalled IE8 - back to normal

Learned my Lesson

Does anyone know if there is a published list on the internet of known problems still with IE8? I want to reinstall it, but I am still afraid I am going to have more problems. I also noticed that my computer was slower with IE8, I didn't like that!!
I am really on the fence about this...
