Windows could not search for new updates

Error Found Code 80070002 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I am using Vista Ultimate 64bit with 4Gigs ram with SP1

Is there a fix for this?

I found a couple of possible fixes. the first one came from here WTF! Vista update error code 80070002 - techPowerUp! Forums and it says:

1) Go to the Start Menu.

2) Click on Computer.

3) Open up the drive where windows is installed (usually your C drive).

4) Open the Windows Folder.

5) Scroll down a bit and locate the SoftwareDistribution folder (exactly like that).

6) Open the Download folder.

7) Open the Install folder.

8) There sould only be one file there. Right click on it and select "Run as Administrator".

9) After entering an Administrator password, run the installation, using the default values and clicking yes at the license.

10) After the installation is complete (shouldn't take more than a few minutes), restart your computer (as an added precaution, though not necessary).

11) After the computer restarts again, run Windows Update again. It should run as normal. All fixed!

I apologize for Microsoft's ineptitude.

This worked for me guys...

And the other two are from here, Error Code 80070002 on Windows Update - Tech Support Guy Forums

and he says two things: Hi,

I have had my pc running on Vista for about 3 months. For the first couple of weeks it allowed me to do Windows Updates. Since then I have had a whole range of different errors and as I found a fix for each one it was replaced by another. I am now constantly getting the Error No. 80070002. I have tried everything I can find online to rectify the problem including those below which seem to have fixed other people's pc's. Any help greatly appreciated.

Solution One
1)Stop the windows update service (from services)
2)Delete temporary update files - In Datastore and download
3)Restart the the windows update service

Solution two
Apply this file
after u apply this file reboot and try to do a update again it should work http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/i...867460-X86.exe\
The file above is an OLD framework.net security fix from it's SP1, but I found several references to it in the google search I did. Here is a link to the MS page describing the download as that link is just a direct download link without and description. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8A-29EB-49CF-9DBC-1A0DC2273FF9&displaylang=en
Hope this helps. And remember, google is your friend.

Hi everyone!

Here is a fast and easy way to resolve 80070002 when tying to update to Vista service pack 2.

#1 You'll need to turn OFF the Windows update service. Do to so:
Right click on Computer (my computer)
Scroll down to Manage. This will luanch the: Computer Management window - which allows you to turn services off and on.
At the bottom of the Left side of the screen you'll see a menu. Click on Services and Applications, the click on "SERVICES". On the Right side of the screen all of your window sevices will load. Scroll down to "windows update"
Right click and select "stop" to stop the service. Leave this window open. You will return shortly.

Now to part 2

Follow this path: C/windows/ SoftwareDistribution/DataStore.
Delete ALL items in the DataStore folders.

Simple enough? Once this is done go BACK to the Services window and windows update service, right click and select "START".

Once the service has restarted, you can now run your update. AND You didn't have to reboot your system.

This has worked for me on 2 different Vista systems. I hope it works for you as well.

Respectfully -
