Vista - error 80070103-can't find a solution

I have a toshiba satellite l305 laptop running vista home basic. i have tried to update to sp2 to no avail. i keep getting the above error. i know it relates to trying to install a duplicate/incompatible driver. firstly, can vista basic be upgraded to sp2? secondly, how can i get around this error? i'm not trying to install any standalone drivers just sp2.

When you say you are trying to install SP2, are you doing it through Windows update or is this a SP2 file you have D/Loaded ?.

Have you tried to install it in safe mode ?, i tend to agree with you about it being a driver issue, or at least MS think it's driver related, (thats no guarantee though), try it in safe mode, if it is a driver thing then the driver in question may not load in safe mode.

Windows update didn't seem to want to work in safe mode. I thought of downloading the stand alone file but decided to give it one more go through update. 7th time lucky it decides to install. Haven't changed a thing so I'm putting it down to one of those Windows moments. Thanks again for your help though.

Why don't you try to install driver directly from manufacturer website? Toshiba Support - Homepage

Stop for the moment Windows Update service ,remove folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution,Install driver form manufacturer website and then restart Windows Update service.
