Updates only working now and again !

Updates are only working now and again, already read thread about doing the sfc.scannow and reading the cbslog but done all the cmd stuff with elevation, no desktop log showed and vista keeps saying "access denied" when trying to open cbslog have always had to manually update defender definitions and my updates have only worked when i've done a full reinstall.
OS : Home Premium 32bit.

Are you sure you run cmd.exe in the same way like in this tutorial ? http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/181765-elevated-command-prompt.html

-if yes make sure Application Information service is set to MANUAL.
SFC command you can also make in safe mode...

Yes it was elevated and AI service is set to manual started, going to try in safemode thanks !

It is very strange -maybe there are only any wrong work restriction relate to UAC -in safe mode reset security settings How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

Hi there just done it again just to double check if i was elevated or not and i was'nt so it worked, but cbs.log in sfcdetails.txt was just blank totally blank, is that good or bad.

If sfcdetails.txt is blank this means sfc /scannow command never used or didn't work.Are sure you've done already sfc /command in safe mode and no one error messages was returned?

It's very bad.I even suspect you lost admin rights

Run cmd.exe and type

net localgroup Administrators >%userprofile%\Desktop\admin.txt

On your desktop appear admin.txt file <-attache this file to post

Hi there have done what you asked here is admin.txt attatched i have changed user name for safety reasons in case i have something in my comp that can see it and change it for reasons of its/their own !

P.S everything i done was with admin rights so i don't know why you might say i lost admin rights, unless something is happening that i don't know about. Strange really strange !

You are in Admin group...theoreticaly you didn't lost admin rights.Neveless create another administrative account and on this new account check results....

Here's copy of my log, i must have deleted my admin account accidently so have recreated thenkyou for your help on this one. Now i have done this can you tell me whether everything is ok ! :D
P.S Can i delete the other account now as there is nothing in there that i would want to save anyway ?

sfdetails.txt don't report any issue.

Leave and work on new account,move your private data to new account and you can remove old account.Does Windows Update work fine now?

Hi there updates still not wotking ! Got issue with firefox now when openig google its not opening in full, i have googlepedia addon and it seems to be all over to the left is that a prob with browser settings, Thanks for all your help !

Try reset Windows Update How do I reset Windows Update components?
if it no help then stop for the moment Windows Update service and delete folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and install hotfixes from Microsoft Download Center http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx

If you'll still have trouble with updates run CheckSur Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate, and for Windows 7 Release Candidate
even if this tool won't resolve problem automatically it create logs:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

System also create logs -there is log C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log but this log is mostly too big
So download FireGenUL Altair Technologies Ltd.
place this file in C:\Windows\System32 and restart computer
next run cmd.exe and type

firegenul

and then will create short *.htm report from WindowsUpdate.log placed in C:\Windows\System32 -report name FireGenUlReport.htm

If CheckSur won't automatically resolve issue both Checksur.log and FireGenUlReport.htm attache to post
