Vista SP2 install major error

Hey guys

I tried installing Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and i ran into a problem. So I installed a part of SP2, then the computer restarts, and a black screen appears where it starts naming files, for example:

"2785/323323 blahblah.dll"

I come back to my computer and I notice that it was hanging at "iexplore.exe" and another thing came along with it, it was called:

"!! 0xc0190036 !!"

I googled that number and users have told each other that they must go into the command prompt using the vista system recovery CD. But first, I tried restarting the computer but it kept going back to that black screen and always stopped at "iexplore.exe" with that weird code next to it. I went and tried system restore and there was one point available, and when i clicked it, it found errors and i let it perform a scan to find the errors. after it was halfway done, the scan just stopped out of nowhere and said absolutely nothing about it. I clicked the restore point again and it scanned, and the same result occurred. Safe mode does not work either. System repair does not do anything (tried it at least 10 times)

After that, I tried going into the command prompt and tried to rename the file because it worked for everyone else who had this problem, but not for me, and i'm getting quite worried because I'm a photographer and i have very important photos in my HDD.

I tried renaming the file like this: "ren C:\Windows\iexplore.exe iexplore.exe.old"

This was the response I got from it: "The system cannot find the file specified."

Help!

P.S. I know this problem is VERY specific, but any help is appreciated! I googled it and it seems that this problem is common at this point, but I still can't fix it.

Flavius - It seems that the link you gave me was for linux.

I just solved it, anyway (sort of). I typed in "notepad.exe" in CMD and went to File Open, and found all my data intact. I'll be moving my important data to an external and I'll be reformatting. Thank you for your input.

Of course this disk is kind of linux. This tool is using to diagnose computer not for install. Many diagnostic tools based on linux. As I said before you have to burn it,boot it and scan computer, you can also use it make backup important your data but of course you have to have sure these data are not infected

Sorry flavius - i just formatted!

Hey guys, I just went through a clean install of vista and installed every single update through windows update (including SP1). after that, windows update allowed me to install SP2. Now i was REALLY hoping it would work considering my system is absolutely clean.

i took the precautions before downloading sp2 - turning off all programs, running system readiness tool, installing it in safe mode, and downloading the standalone sp2 (after windows update sp2 didn't work), not having vLite or whatever, and extra precautions (as a last resort) such as hiding microsoft services and disabling startup items (done through System Configuration)

I get the following error when trying to install it through the standalone:

Error: ERROR_SMI_PRIMITIVE_INSTALLER_FAILED(0x8007371c)

I get the same error code (8007371c) using windows update for sp2.

I'm using windows home premium 32bit, btw.

what should i do? I need to install vista sp2 because my college requires it when registering for internet at our dorms (ResNet)

ahh, okay. I'll be giving that a try. Thank you Flavius!

It seems that a lot of people are also having trouble with this problem for SP1 AND SP2...hopefully the link will help them..

I ran the registry scan and the driver scan that the website above gave me.

I had 116 registry errors - it cleaned out only 15 before it told me to purchase the full version.

i had 2 out of date drivers - it told me to purchase the full version before i can update any drivers.

I was wondering if there's any free utilities available that would be able to do these scans effectively.

Don't worry about it.In every system where never any reg cleaner was used are many non-dangerous errors.Ignore them

I know one Unknown Device Identifier - Freeware Download
althogh I prefer looking drivers directly in net.Describe devices for these you need drivers

I clicked on the link you gave me on those display adapter updates, and selected the operating system to windows vista home premium 32-bit. I downloaded the exe file, namely the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows Vista * 32 (exe). The other two on the list were "intended for use by developers" so I didn't bother with those downloads.

I tried installing the exe file but ended up with this error: The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer.

I double-checked device manager and noticed that i really was using mobile intel 965 express chipset family.

I went to my computer's manufacturer website and looked for driver downloads. I have a Dell Vostro 1400, btw. I found out that the version on my computer was more up-to-date than the version available on the dell website. I checked for the driver update in device manager for this device and it said it was up to date...
