Stuck on installing updates and rebooting loop

Hello, I've been facing the following problem, - actually i'm not been able to solve it - with the last Vista update the system has rebooted and says it is installing updates and reboot and says it is installing updates and goes like that for ever. I can't get the hand on it. Is there a way to solve it without restoring everything but maybe only the system or the boot part ? Thanks

Hello Calabrache,

It sounds like either something may have interrupted the updates, or one of them may be conflicting with another update. You might see if doing a System Restore at boot using a restore point dated before you did these updates may be able to fix this for you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

There is.Method THREE from this MS article The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista

Thanks shawn, i did use a recovery disk, to do a system restore based on your tutorial. Many thanks. What is strange is that the update installed themselves and the pc started a loop : boot - message installing update step 3 of 3 - then reboot and so on. I try to press F8 at the start but unlike XP does not work with vista and anyway i'm not sure i would know where in the registry fix that probleme. So the system restore did work. Many thanks

In my previous post is the answer on that.In registry appear these subkeys:

HLKM\Components\AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
HKLM\Components\PendingXmlIdentifier

to remove is also pending.xml file in C:\Windows\WinSxS folder

Calabrache,

I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted. Flavius has the correct answer for where in the registry to also resolve this. You may need to only install those updates one at a time to get them installed.
