I've been getting this for 3 days now. It started out of nowhere, but it keeps doing it over and over and over. I've tried many things suggested in other peoples threads, and nothing has worked so far. I even backed up and restored from last week before the issue started. Now I have different issues that are a minor annoyance and am sure will correct itself once I can get windows to update again.

For some reason, I still only have SP1. I have auto updates turned on and always update when prompted. So I'm not sure why I still only have SP1. I tried the forced standalone update. But after 5-10 minutes of "preparing my computer" it says it failed the install. I've tried 10 different times even in safe mode.

I think its time to start from scratch, maybe I did something wrong. But I really need some help with this please.

I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

Ok, I need help with this. Apparently I just dont get it. I cant seem to extract :\Sources\Install.wim from my Vista DVD. I've tried 2 different ways using the 7-zip you suggested. it keeps saying failed each time I try it. What am I doing wrong? Please tell me step by step what I need to do because I'm obviously doing something wrong.

1.Open Vista DVD
2.Find file X:\Sources\Install.wim right click on this file>>7-zip>>Open archive. In this archive navige to Windows\Servicing where is stored TrustedInstaller.exe, right click on it and choose "copy to" and choose any location where you have full access

Because you have also x64 system, instead extract this file you can use this one from another the same thread:

Now its telling me I dont have permissions to paste it into C:Windows\Servicing. Maybe thats why it kept failing earlier. How do I give myself permissions or what do I do now?

1.Navigate to C:\Windows\Servicing folder, takeownership of this folder and add your account to have full control
2.Copy TrustedInstaller.exe to this folder
3.Remove your account from permissions to Servicing folder
4.Restore ownership of Servicing folder back to "NT Service\TrustedInstaller"

Useful links:Take Ownership of file
TrustedInstaller - Restore as Owner
Folder Permissions

My Computer

Ok, I took ownership and copied TrustedInstaller and pasted it into C:Windows\Servicing. I removed the permissions to the folder

But when I go to restore ownership, this is what I get...

"An object (User, Group, or Built-in security principal) with the following name cannot be found: "NT Service\TrustedInstaller". Check the selected object types and locations for accuracy and ensure that you have typed the object name correctly, or remove this object from selection."

EDIT:

I get that after clicking the "Check Names" button

In my previous post give you in "useful links" link how restore TustedInstaller as Owner
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/159360-trustedinstaller-restore-owner.html

Yeah, I was following the instructions there and on step 6, where it said to click the "Check Names" button after entering in NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller in the groups area and thats when I get that error.

I just tried it again and am still getting
"An object (User, Group, or Built-in security principal) with the following name cannot be found: "NT Service\TrustedInstaller". Check the selected object types and locations for accuracy and ensure that you have typed the object name correctly, or remove this object from selection."

Basically my guess is its telling me there is no TrustedInstaller, even though I had pasted it into the Servicing folder and its still there.

What do I do now?

My Computer

I think know now what happend.Because for the moment there is no TrustedInstaller service there is no TrustedInstaller account as well.Neverless even without correct owner after restarting computer WU should work now and Windows Modules Installer should work as well.Restoring oryginal permission have only meaning to prevent another potential issue due to non-oryginal permissions.WU is working now or not?If after WU is working now TrustedInstaller should be availabe in permissions according to those tutorial

My Computer

Nope, Windows Updated still says it encountered an unknown error and gives te same error code.

And when I check services, Windows Module Installer is not listed....or am I checking in the wrong place?

And have you entered fix to registry?I mean this one
http://www.vistax64.com/attachments...odules-installer-missing-trustedinstaller.zip

Remember also to enter this fix you have to run regedit from SYSTEM accout not your own!I said about this in this post http://www.vistax64.com/1093756-post16.html
as well

Ok, I musta have royally screwed up. Because the TrustedInstaller I downloaded from your link is a .exe. Nothing happens when I double click it. And when I try to import it, it fails because its not a .reg file.

It says "Cannot import C:TrustedInstaller.exe: The key selected is invalid"

What did I do wrong?

My brain is starting to hurt, lol

First try differentiate two things:TrustedInstaller.exe and TrustedInstaller.reg
You have to download both!Yes as you said you downloaded and placed TrustedInstaller.exe into Servicing folder, but you didn't download & import into registry TrustedInstaller.reg.In my previous post have links to download, unpack and import TrustedInstaller.reg.and in second one you have also instruction how to do that.

My Computer

OMG, I'm such an idiot. I'm sorry I made this such an episode. When I downloaded the .reg file in the other thread you linked, I went to move the zip file to the other folder I had set up to make it easier for me to find, and when I did that, it said I already had a file with the same name, so I thought it was the same zip file.

Anyway, its all working properly now. I have TrustedInstaller as the owner set and now Windows Updater is working.

Thank you so much for sticking through my dumbness and for helping me out!

EDIT: Ugh, and now 196 megs of updates, lol
