Updates forcing restore

Have a Vista 32 Home that has a problem updating. Has 38 updates it wants to do. Gets all the way through them, installs them.... but after reboot apparently has a problem loading windows so goes into "startup repair" and eventually does a system restore.

Diagnostic report from repair states ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt.

So end up at pre-update restore point.

Anyone have a clue which update might cause this? How to repair or circumvent the update?
