Vista automatic updates disaster. Please help!

Hi folks,
I'm new in here and relitively new to Vista. I've got an Asus 5535 laptop and everything was running fine until just the other day when I turned it on. The computer will boot but opens an automatic update screen (3 of 3 0%) then shuts down and does the same again, in a loop. Automatic updates are turned off so I'm lost as to why it's doing it.
I've run sys restore and tried to boot up in safe mode etc but nothing will get around it. I've not made a recovery disk and so it looks like I'm screwed.

Windows start up can't find an error because the OS has loaded ok. Is there any way I can bypass this spurious update so that I can get into windows?

Cheers,

Jon

tip: use linux to get into dead windows and repair them or backup data before fresh install

REPAIR/BACKUP DATA:
using any linux distribution you can access your windows disk and repair if you're able to. maybe there's some file where scheduled actions are stored so you can get rid of the post-restart updating process.

if not- use linux to get all your data from system and copy them to usb drive for example and then do a recovery.

to get linux, you need live computer with internet connection. go to Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu i.e. and download live cd (approx 700MB). burn it. now put it into damaged laptop and boot from cd. once in ubuntu, you can access windows disk and copy or edit everything you need.

RECOVERY:
if you didn't receive windows installation disc with your laptop, there probably will be recovery data on hidden partition and you will have to press some key during boot. dunno which exactly for asus, google it. then do a factory recovery, which basically does a fresh install and gets computer into state like it was when you bought it.

just remember- if you choose to do a full recovery, back up all your data carefully and after doing back up, check once again if you backed up everything

Vista updates another ms failure. I shall take a look at another OS

I have bought each version of MS. Each one has had many problems.

They should pay us for the hours, days, monthts..years of updating. Or replace Vista with the new 7...free. I have been using computers since 1980...I have learned and tried everything suggested.... Why Gates does not return or recall as they do automobiles, etc.... His foundations have been built with our dollars.
Why we continue to follow the yellow brick road is astonishing.
Now is the time for an OS ...that is complete...reqady to roll....
How many agree? Let it be known.....new versions...equipment not supported..many progrms not supported.... Why do we SUPPORT MICROSOFT?

Surely....they could fix each problem....without their supporters having to jump through hoops...over and over.....update failed.....update failed. then the information copied about the failed update..sent to ms and no solution.
I for one appreciate what windows has done....that works.... each new day ...it does not work.
We are only unpaid bug reporters....so they can attempt to find the problem...which they have created. It is much as the banks and auto bailouts.

The only solution....buy the new version. That is what we have done...and until they give free online support to fix their product....we shall continue to be hounded by updates that do not work. Ever check the number of updates for Vista?
