Updated Vista to SP2, and can't boot up.

I've been running Vista on Service Pack 1 for some time, and tonight I tried for the second time to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 for x64 systems (KB948465).

Both times I was told it downloaded successfully, when shutting down I was told it installed successfully. Then Vista gets halfway through booting up and a blue screen error flashes up lightning fast (too quick to read) and it restarts over in a never ending loop, getting only as far as the blue screen flash every time.

I can successfully restore back with recovery to the point before the update was installed, but if this continues, I'll never be able to update!

Any Ideas? Before recovery I tried the repair options, but it couldn't find anything wrong. Now the update log reads "Installation status: failed, Error details: Code 800F0816"

My specs are Dell Studio XPS 435MT, i7 CPU, 6Gb RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium, SP1.

It will be rather hard.

1.Try reset WU componnets in aggressive mode How do I reset Windows Update components?
2.Delete all *.xml files from C:\Windows\WinSxS folder
3.Uninstall all 3p security software -firewall,antivirus,antispyware
4.Try install SP2 standalone version (not from Windows Update) in safe mode

If above steps don't help folllow below

1.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:

sfc /scannow

2.Run Readiness Tool Download details: System Update Readiness Tool for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [September 2009]

3.again run cmd.exe and type:

cd /d C:\Windows\inf
dir /s /b >%userprofile%\Desktop\Inf.txt

above commands create Inf.txt log on your desktop.

4.Pack all following files:

C:\Users\<your account>\Desktop\Inf.txt
C:\Windows\logs\cbs\*.*
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate*.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
C:\Windows\winsxs\poqexec.log
(if exists)
C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.* (if exists)
C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\Datastore\*.*
C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\application.evtx

and upload them to RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

5.Download VistaSysInfoTool http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/176785-vistaforums-sysinfo-tool.html ,select all in this tool and generate log.Log attache to post or upload with other required files on rapidshare

Much appreciated, Flavius. I'll try 'em out...

Seems a shame that we have to do so much legwork when a MS product screws up. If I've paid for the product it bugs me that I have to burn so many calories getting it to work right without much help from MS.

To be fair I've never had any other problems other than with updating. I'm clearly cursed. This is my desktop, but even my laptop won't install the SP1 .NET update.

I hope Win 7 is easier.

I hope Win 7 is easier.
