SP2 update errors

So I had to reinstall Vista once again after a hdd recently failed and went and got all my updates again. Except it seems to repeatedly tell me I need to install the same SP2 file. This is the actual update:

I've gotten the notification and reinstalled it many times, but it continues to tell me I need it and I'm unsure what to do. It may or may not be stalling other updates as I've receive no others after getting this one.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Right click on the entry in the window you show above and say "hide". That assumes, that SP2 is actually installed. You can check that as follows: Start > right click on COMPUTER > Properties > there it should say SP1 or SP2 pretty much on top of the page.

Crap. I'm stuck on SP1:

Does this means until I can get this little 3mb update it will not let me get the full SP2? I hid the update like you said, but I guess that won't really help. Dunno what to do...

EDIT:
Here's my recently failed updates in the history if that helps:

You are the lucky one. SP2 has some problems and I would not be eager to install it. Last week I reinstalled my Vista for various reasons, but when SP2 came around, I did hide it. My previous install did have SP2 and a lot of problems. Now my system runs like on rails (without SP2) and no problems.
But if you absolutely want to install it, I suggest you do it in safe mode and disconnect all I/O except mouse and keyboard.

Do you think anything in the failed update history above is the reason why I can't get to SP2?

That`s possible but unlikely since most of those are .Netframework. What`s more possible is the cancelled SP2 attempt (first entry). Something could be stuck in the system that blocks it.
Now what is this last entry where it says SP2 successful?

It was one of the last of about 10 attempts to install it.

It says it's 'successful' every time, but I still got the notification to install it, until I hid the update (the one cancelled). So maybe it has been installed but just keeps telling me to install it for some reason, and still lists me as SP1, not SP2.

If it says SP1 on the System page, then it was not installed. But as I said, that may be an advantage. I would not worry too much about it.

Wow thanks. k I'll go through these, hopefully one of the first works and will let you know.

Also re:the hdd:
I'm not using the old one if that's what you're wondering about, this was a fresh install on a new drive. The old drive had started to fail after showing signs of boot corruption and a Vista reinstall was made impossible. Although I was still able to access it as a slave sata, just not boot wit hit, and managed to move files off and actually reformat it. Unfortunately it's not showing up in explorer or in the bios now though, so to no avail. It was only a 500gb so it's not too big a deal though.

So I strong recommend unplug a slave drive, leave only one new drive and try install SP2 standalone version in safe mode again. If it fail too follow to my previous post.
