I am helping a friend install windows updates on her Sony VAIO laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1 installed. Laptop had not been updated since January 2009. All updates completed fine with the exception of KB973565.

When installed via automatic windows updates I get the following error.

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB973565)

Installation date: ‎12/‎6/‎2009 3:11 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 8007001B

Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified that could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.

=============================================================

I downloaded the update manually and tried to install Windows6.0-KB973565-x86.msu and it also fails. The event viewer details are below.

The Windows update "Security Update for Windows (KB973565)" could not be installed because of an error: 2147942427 "The drive cannot find the sector requested." (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\Administrator\Downloads\Windows6.0-KB973565-x86.msu" ")

=============================================================

I had the system run a chkdisk on boot and I also defragged the HD. There are no errors. Windows Update has also completed the install of other updates after this one without any issue.

Any help with resolving this update failure would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DiabloBlack

Ben,

Thank you so much for your reply. I downloaded and ran the FixIt tool from Microsoft that you recommended http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683 rebooted and ran Windows Update but unfortunately the update still fails.

The update seems to move along rather quickly indicating that all is going well but then stops at 90% or so (see attached KB973565.png). The hard drive runs for 10 minutes or so as if it is installing the update then it finally fails.

The error is the same as the last time I did the update automatically, Error Code 8007001B (see attached KB973565.txt). I have not tried to run the update again from the downloaded Windows6.0-KB973565-x86.msu file. I fear I will see the same result.

I have also included the Windows Update log for this associated update (see attached WindowsUpdate.log).

Is there anything else I should try or any other information I should include to assist with the troubleshooting of the update failure?

Thank you,
DiabloBlack

This error means corruption in CBS components (damages in C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages folder or/and HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing)

Solution:

-depends of damages:fill missing files and keys (if damages or not too big),or repair installation (this method work always),

1.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type:

sfc /scannow

when it finish type in console:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

on your desktop appear sfcdetails.txt file.

2. Run Readiness Tool Download details: System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) [September 2009]

if you will have luck this tool sometimes solve this issue automatically,if not it create

CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Both files sfcdetails.txt and CheckSur.log files attache to post

Flavius,
What did you mean by type in the console? Are you saying he should enter the line in the command prompt still?
I am trying to learn this myself.

Thanks,
Ben

Flavius,

Thank you for the reply.

I have ran sfc /scannow and attached sfcdetails.txt

I downloaded and ran System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) [September 2009] and attached CheckSur.log

I manually ran update Windows6.0-KB973565-x86.msu and it still fails. I have attached EventLog.txt

Not sure what to try at this point

I sure do appreciate everyone's help.

Thank You,
DiabloBlack
