i have windows vista that came preinstalled in my laptop...From few days i have problem configuring the updates..when i turn my laptop on there's a screen that comes up showing "configuration updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete" and after a couple of seconds it read windows couldn't configure updates.Reverting changes....This is happening even though there is around 86GB of free space in my laptop....My user profile also stops working withing seconds when i connect to the internet giving following details

Restore system:
System Restore - Undo

When you restore system.

Install service packs standalone versions from Microsoft Download Center (not from Windows Updates) Download available for Standalone Vista SP2

I downloaded SP2 as advised but it didn't get installed in my laptop due to ERROR:0x8004100a..so i even downloaded System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista(KB947821)...but that too didn't help in installating SP2....What should i do now???

Import this fix attached here:Environments.zip and restart computer.If it don't help run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type:

sfc /scannow

when it finish type:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

on your desktop appear sfcdetails.txt file

find also CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\LOGS\CBS

Both files:CheckSur.log and sfcdetails.txt attache to post.

Possibly %userprofile% variable has been corrupted and it must be fixed.

Check both links:
1) The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

2)User Profile Error - Logged on with a Temporary Profile

CBS.log file doesn't exist in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder...This folder contains 5 files:-
1.CBS (Access is denied to this file)
2.CBS.persist (Access is denied to this file also)

Also i want to inform u that everytime i connect to internet i get disconnected within seconds and reason being userprofile has stopped working and the windows help and support advised to change the DEP settings.I turned off DEP for all the available options but that gave a very poor and a very old look to the internet explorer as if it was not Vista but DOS..Can formatting the laptop help ???

This file it is CBS.log.Only you have incorrect settings and explorer hide file extensions -you should correct it in Control Panel>>Folder Options or use any external good file manager which show everything correct independly from system setting i.e popular Total Commander.there are also many freeware tools too i.e I'm using FreeCommander.

In additional to above
1. Prepare log from UserProfileView UserProfilesView - View user profiles information on your Windows

Create log File>>Save
2.Download WMI Diagnostic Tool WMIDiag.zip,unpack it and place to C:\Windows\System32 folder

3.Run cmd.exe with administrative previllliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin)
and type:

WMIDiag.vbs

and you have to wait for while (sometimes even one hour -it depence) then appear pop-up with created log.Maybe if you will have luck this tool solve your issue automatically.
