NET Framework 3.5 installation problem

I know I'm not the only person who has had persistent problems trying to install this update. It seems that nobody seems to have an answer on how to fix this problem. I am planning to upgrade to Windows 7 and am asking if this update, which MS calls important, is needed for the upgrade or in Windows 7?

If there is an answer to this installation problems, I would love to know what it is?

Bob Hi and welcome

Net framework is nec in win 7, but doesnt seem to give us much grief on install there.

Thanks. I have one more thing I want to try to get it installed in Vista. If that doesn't work, I'll just wait until after I do the upgrade.

OK. I succeeded in installing the update manually, but I think I broke the Windows Installer in the process. Automatic updates is still trying to install it, but nothing is happening -- no fail mesage, etc. I also tried to uninstall another program and I get a message saying windows is preparing to uninstall and then it freezes.
